    A few days ago I was lucky enough to get a beautiful 308 from 1984. I've wanted one since I was a kid so it's fabulous to finally own one. The previous owner had it for 18 years during which time he didn't let it within 40 miles of a rain drop and has maintained it very well so it comes with a FSH to cover its 48,000 miles. You can't beat driving about with a big grin on your face!

    Just a few little jobs to do and questions to ask which is where you guys come in :)

    1) Anyone know where I can get one of those rubber mats that cover the fuel filler and fold out to protect the body when you fill up? (Mine is perished and I can't find it on the parts lists I have).

    2) What type of fuel do you guys in the UK use? (The previous owner used standard unleaded and lead additive)

    3) The ashtray lid needs taking out and spraying, can the whole unit be just popped out from above or is it held in place from beneath?

    4) The small black plate on the aircon control could also do with replacing, are these available without buying the whole switch unit?

    5) I've seen some 308's with a zip cover over the spare, was this fitted as standard as most do not seem to have it?

    Hello and welcome!

    Early GTBs had the zipper cover over the spare tire, later cars as yours deleted it and used a hard washer bottle in lieu of the soft 'saddle bag' design....

    Welcome to Ferrari Chat and congrats on realising your dream - that car looks beautiful! May you enjoy many happy miles. I have a 85 308 GTS QV.

    Firstly register on www.ownersferrari.com - there is a secret link there to ferrari uk for parts. (check under classic spares on the owners site). Also check out www.superformance.co.uk

    As far as the fuel splash goodie, I replaced mine at my local ferrari dealer, IIRC it was about 20 pounds.

    I have also replaced the aircon plate

    check out italian car parts for it http://www.italiancarparts.com/labels_plates/ferrari_labels_plates.htm

    it was quite pricey but very good quality - indistinguishable from the original.

    The ashtray is easy to respray. Remove the silver horse by loosening the nut underneath. Open lid, then slide newspaper (use whole sheets just in case) under the lid from all four sides, then close the lid onto the newspaper. Cover any gaps between the pieces of newspaper with masking tape. Then just spray with a matt black paint while ashtray is in place. A 15 minute job which is definitely worthwhile.

    Your engine bay is very nice but may I make two suggestions?

    Your plenum cover should be red but the "Ferrari" and the "Quattrovalvole" script, as well as the tops of the raised 'fins' that run right to left should not be painted. Maybe try and remove the paint from these raised (flat) areas, perhaps by careful sanding with a block? It will really look good then.

    The air intake box housing the air filter should have a Ferrari logo and UFI script on it. You can get a stencil on ebay to do this yourself. Search on ebay in the US for 'Ferrari airbox stencil' or something like that. Make sure you get the 308 one, the 328 one is very different.

    Thanks for the info, having just looked at some photos of other cars you are quite right it does look much better with the exposed lettering and fins, will get on it!

    I found this stencil, the seller seems to be saying it is for both a 308 and 328, do you know which?

    Looks like a nice car - many congrats. (And ignore the furriners, the steering wheel is right where it should be :D AND of course the thing is blessed by being devoid of silly Cat alytic convertors & slow down lights etc as well!)

    The rubber flap thing is available. You can pick them up on Ebay or from Eurospares (no need to buy it from the US!)

    For fuel I have recently reverted to running my 328 on ordinary unleaded. Frankly it seems to like it better than super.

    You really shouldn't need to use any form of additive though one of the cheapest bits of preventative maintenance you can do is to put a bottle of fuel injection cleaer in the tank every 6 months or so. The KJet metering head is very expensive to rebuild if it gets gummed up.

    Can't answer your other Q's but look at www.eurospares.co.uk for parts diags etc to identify parts you might need & find out whether they are available or not.

    That is the 308 one, the 328 only has the "Ferrari" part, not the UFI part, as far as I know.

    The stencil comes with detailed instructions, the most important one to adhere to is to trim it down to the smallest size you can, to allow it to fit in between the raised lines on the airbox. Otherwise it will not sit flush on the surface and paint seeps underneath.

    You may also want to give the whole unit a quick spray of black paint before you start with the stencil, so that the whole thing looks pristine.
