forza price guide joke

just read new nov 07 forza that has a 'market guide' for mid engine v8's.

what 'market' is this supposed to represent re 348 spider prices between $65 and 75k? i had one listed for 1 year at those prices and never even had 1 single, solitary inquiry about it. that was in ferrari market letter and several other web sites. it is my experience that the vast majority will sell for between $40 and 50k regardless of what asking price is. thats where mine sold and frankly that was what it was worth.

any others with different experiences?

 

When did it sell ? People are say 328s are 50-60k cars ..so a much rarer and objectively better car such as the 348 Spider should be worth more in todays market . Just my 3 cents.

 

"People" say a lot of things. Realistically the vast majority of 328s sell in the $40-50k range. Some go for below $40k and some go for $50-60k. Ferrari price guides can be faulty because except for the newer models they don't change hands all that often.

 

I don' know... I was only looking at the pretty pictures (shameless self promotion).

IIRC, the Oct. '07 issue of Forza covered the market guide for the 308's that was an exact rewrite (no change in $$$ so why the reissue) of the Oct '06 issue. I haven't read the Nov '07 issue yet, but is it rewrtten exactly like the Nov ' 06 issue that covered 348's and etc.?

Regardless of the 'asking prices' all of the 98-99 355 spiders I know of sold in the $70ks with under 20k miles.

Therefore a 348 spider would seem to be in the $50ks.

 

i think its hard to say that a if one 355 sells for 70K all 355s are 70K.

There have been 308s in better (great)condition and the same price as ratty 348s, or real ratty 355s (dying).

Dont forget, 348s are a heck of alot more money to service than a 328...engine out service makes the cost of ownership double, thats a deciding factor to some in the market.

With 355s and those value guides, and the 360s with the F1 tranny....i think they will go the same way eventually.

People always harp on the cost of maintenance for the 348 vs. the 328. The difference according to www.Eugeniosferrariservice.com is $1000 every three or five years (for the major service). So if $15-25 per month in additional maintenance is going to break the bank, definitely stay away from the 348. If the $1000 major service cost difference makes the cost of ownership double, you should not worry about the cost of owning any of the models listed. Also, Eugenio lists the Mondial T and 355 as more expensive maintence costs compared to the 348. Just like the endless discussion of the untrue 348 reliability problems, speak from experience! You would think on a Ferrari based chat site the posting would be a little more informed. And don't get me started on the TR!

why do think TR prices are in the toilet? I hear it all the time about mine. The problem really is ferrari are making too many cars, and people are into cars they cant afford...when the heads melt on a 355...10K is a hard pill... I know of 3 people here in toronto that recently bought cars (328,348,400i) and paid fair price....about 50k...a benz 350SLK costs more than these ...they flipped out when they realized the cost of the odd ends they needed. Thats the problem and why prices are lower....

 

It amuses me these "market experts". One of the real advantages of the internet is that via sites like ebay and others it's fairly easy to determine what the market is. The market is what the buyers are prepared to pay. In other words the selling price, not the asking (in some cases dreaming) price. The experience of the author of this thread is a good example of this.

 

I would suggest you Eugenios and ask for a quote on a 328 major. Then have someone else call for a quote on a 348 service. I'm willing to bet that in the real world the difference is far more than 1K.

Eugenios listed the price difference at around $1500 a few months ago. Now he lists it as $1000. Tim Stanford did the major on a friend's 328 a few years ago. He paid around $4k. I had mine done recently and it was not really any different than that. I think the price of maintenance is influenced by the cost of the car. Look at the price for a major service on a 360. I thought they were supposed to be much easier to work on??? I'll grant that the 328 is a little cheaper to work on, but not to the extent that your cost of ownership will double if you have a 348.

I wouldn't call a 348 Spider an objectively better car than a 328 by any stretch. So maybe it's not so 'objective'. I'd say the 348 Spider is better than the earlier 348s, clearly.

Yes, the maintenance is out of line with the current market prices. That causes disillusionment and a lot of fire sales.

But the main issue is that every 328 I see is in a different state of preservation. If you want a really good car, cosmetically and mechanically, the $50K-$60K range is correct. And if you know Sheehan, the types of cars he has in mind are the nicer ones -- perfectly original cars, low mileage, etc. Those 328s that sell at $37K and 'need some stuff done' aren't what he is referring to.

The other issue is that the economy sucks right now (technical term). As the ultimate discretionary automotive toy, Ferrari prices may be under some downward pressure. Hard to say.

 

I don't the major service is the main factor in 348 pricing. Styling, reputation, nostalgia and overall reliability and repair costs are probably buoying 328 prices a bit, and working against the 348 and TR. We can argue for years (and have...) about specific cars, but in the broader market I think this is all true.

 

That's all I'm after. The subjective stuff (and the partiucular vehicle's condition) is really what should make the difference in my mind.

I agree on the price guide disparity as well. I believe after doing a lot of research before buying your car, the guides are more like what a dealer will sell them for. The other apect is how well cared for/perfect the car is. How do you like the GT3? Had it to the track yet? I have changed a lot of things/upgrades since last we talked. Drop a pm, Scott
