You mean other than the speedo needle rests at zero?

Speedo is a MPH unit (not primarily KPH) and other gauges are metric?

I wondered if that was it.

    I've seen it before though.

I believe a MPH replacement unit was availible. Also, weren't UK cars in MPH?

    Regards,

Plus it was just a lot easier and cheaper to only change the speedo to miles from metric. Do you know how much it would cost to convert all of the gauges to metric, especially the clock and the tachometer? Trust me, you don't want to know!!! ;-)

During the Federalization procedure, most shops apllied a mph decal over the gauge face. The giveaway is the fraying of the white paper backing around the indicator light openings.

FMVSS requirement for the speedo to be in mph...

Our '73 Dino is a UK spec. It originally had an MPH speedometer. When my parents moved from the UK to Switzerland in '77, the authorities made my dad replace the speedo face with one that read in KPH. (The Swiss are notorious nitpickers when it comes to bringing a car into that country.) The odometer still reads in miles, however. I wonder if it's a decal... I never thought of that.

I've found most odos weren't changed... Still register in km... Easy enough to check.

Might be required but I can assure it isn't done on all cars. My first 400i had a KPH speedo in it and still does.

The typeface is also different from mine, and the indicator lights are not labeled. Could this be an earlier one than mine? Mine's an 81.

Good responses, I learned more than I bargained for................Notice 'KraigG's speedo & tach needles @ 10MPH & 500RPM, this is what I see on 99% of the gauges of cars for sale, as was mine when I bought it Feb. 2006 but now finally rests on zero on both gauges. (83/84-400i).

The red zone on 2NA's B.S. meter reads "remove combat boots' (from my wifes feet) in my car!

Did you also notice that your "horses" are different sizes between the 2 gauges? It might appear that your speedo has the reproduction overlay. How's the odometer?

Mine is a series II, and I did notice that the kilos read in 30 increments on yours & 40 increments on mine, so they are different labels (and maybe not too concerned @ logo size at time of remake). Also noticed that Tach doesn't appear to have labels either, but don't know all the languages out there where this or the clock would need them. Everywhere else reads 'italiano'.

Mine's on the console. Also, the "unleaded fuel only" sticker is nowhere near the fuel gauge!!!

I hear from time to time that the workers @ the plant would enjoy wine on lunch break, afterwards some things would turn out dofferently.

I think what you are seeing is the differences in how the various companies that brought these cars into DOT/EPA compliance went about doing it.
