    Hi all,

Hopefully this is the correct forum for this thread to be in, apologies to the moderators in advance if not.

I am looking into purchasing a mid-'70s 365 GT4 BB which is poor condition (little to no historical data, paintwork is shot and engine doesn't run), does anyone know what the market price of one of these would be, or where I might be able to get further information on pricing?

I have previously come across another 365 GT4 BB that was sold for around US$50,000, but the car I am looking at has a quirk in that it is one of the 58 right hand drive examples.

Any further information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I suggest that you ask this in the boxer section.

    Good luck with your search.

Buying a boxer in non-running condition can be financially devastating. If the engine isnt running then you have no idea if the gearbox is any good. Buy it with the intention of a full restoration otherwise you're setting yourself up for a painful lesson. A non-running boxer to me is below $50K, closer to $40K so im not upside down when shes back on the road. The safest route is to buy one that has seen regular use.

In today's market a 365 GT4/BB that you're describing is worth the $50K all day long. Baring a rare case where an engine and transaxle that can not be rebuilt, at that price you have a $100 to $125K cushion to get the car restored and still be with in the market value of a restored 365 BB. If you save money along the way and get the car done for $75 to $85K you will be "in the money"!! Gene

If you pay someone to restore the car count on $200K plus the cost of the car, probably north of $200K to be realistic. A boxer is a very time consuming car to restore especially if you chose to go concours to bring it up to "one of the best around". Restoring my 308 myself (with the exception of applying the paint) im into it for $60K plus the $30K I paid to buy the car in the first place. Forget $100K to do a boxer from top to bottom.

It sound like this car would not be a good candidate for a concourse type restoration. Yes $200+ and you may (if every thing goes according to plan) get a concourse winning car. If I had a rough 365BB that I paid $50K for, I would bring it up to a great driver status and call it a day. The car than can be enjoyed with out worries. It still could be sold for $150k to $175K after its restoration (in a few minutes could be more), with out making it a concourse condition. Gene

With all due respect Newman, $100K goes along way.

    Respray $15 to $20K
Engine out service, clutch, water pump, carb rebuild, w/engine bay detail $15-$20K
    Interior work $10-$12K
    front end $3-5K
    Shocks rebuild/bushings $7K
    Wheels/tires $2800
    Misc. $10K
    ___________________
    Total $63K-$77K

This is what it would take to get most Boxers into a great driver and in some cases if you get lucky a concourse quality car. Gene

If I were going to go for a car like this, I would certainly try to find out why the engine won’t run.
If it’s just carbs needing rebuilding, that’s about $2500.
If it’s due to broken/ bent valves, that’s about $25,000.
Also take a look in the transmission, or at least drain the oil to see if anything nasty comes out. Broken gears/broken differential will add another $20/25K.
Right hand drive is the norm in Singapore I assume, but what effect would that have on resale value down the road, if any?

Any pictures of the beast in question?

    Good luck, John

$100K plus the cost of the car might result in a nice looking driver. If you want a concours car, you'll spend $200K plus the cost of the car - easily. FYI, a Pebble Beach quality restoration on a rare 50s Ferrari requiring a full restoration at one of the best shops approaches $400K these days - truth. Parts, books and tools are expensive on these cars and plating, bodywork, painting and quality mechanics are also priced at a premium. If you want it platinum, it's going to hurt.

My $.02, if you want an amazing 365BB, buy one for $200K and enjoy it right away. The amount of money and angst you will invest in a car requiring a full restoration is not for the faint of heart or wallet. I did that very thing with my Dino and while the results were great, I wouldn't do it again.

Buy wisely and best of luck...Keith
