I am moving into my office in a few weeks and come to find out my only option is a T1 line. I have a quote from Earthlink's B2B division for $399 a month. Anyone have any advice on the subject?

    Location?

399 isn't bad, but the terms? 1 year, 2 year, 3 year commitment? 1.5up and down? What does Earthlink supply with their line?

Is that for the ISP portion? Do you still have to pay AT&T for the line itself? I get mine thorugh the hospital: no Ma Bell charge, just $400/mo for the ISP.

That doesn't sound too bad if it's full-bandwidth, and not fractional or frame-relay.

We recently moved from a single T1 + PRI (for 23 phone lines) to "Ethernet over Copper" (10 Mbit up/down) plus 2 T1s for VoIP/data for about the same price (ie 13Mbit for the same as 1.5mbit 5 years ago).

I would suggest giving XO a call -- I've been quite impressed with their whole organization from both sales/support side and from a usability/performance of circuit side. It compares very favorably to uunet (verizon/mci/worldcom, nom du jour).

It's not uncommon to be told "this is your only option" with the caveat omitted "that we can offer you". Talking to other carriers can open up other options....

This is a one year agreement with the equipment included. I can't believe they don't have fiber, DSL or even cable running to the building. It turns out they have an agreement with a wireless provider that has an antenna on top of the building providing internet service.

I just got 3 T1's from at&t. It has been nothing but a pain in the ass. I had to wait 2 months to get it.

Anyway I am paying 380 per line per month.

Try Cbeyond, if they are in your area. They cold called my office, and when we compared their quite for 12 phone lines, fax line, T-1 internet, and a ton of other stuff, including remote backup, cell phone time etc, to what we were paying for these services, we are saving $700 per month. Have been on the service for 19 months and are very happy with it.

I'm paying around 1200/mo for 10Mbit of data.
In other words, I'm paying roughly the same amount for over twice the bandwidth.
Unless you have a need for separate T1 lines (ie frame-relay to different locations, or redundancy via different routes) you would be well advised to solicit quotes from other carriers.
