Check out this possible new track for next year. Phase 1 is to the left of the yellow line. http://www.oregonraceway.com/ Nguyen Image Unavailable, Please Login
Very cool, interesting choice for a location. I drove right past there on my way home from Sun River.
Private track, when built it "should" be ready for SCCA certification. But its out in the middle of nowhere, with no infrastructure to support an actual race weekend. The closest motel is an hour away in Hood River. It's about a 3 hour drive from PDX. I don't know too many people who would regularly drive there for just a track day. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see it built, but I'm not holding my breath.
Isn't this the track they've been trying to build for years? My first thought was that joining the club could be pretty fun, but then I started thinking, with PIR right here why bother?
That's a good reason to go out there once in a while, but not necessarily a reason to join their country club.
Agreed Don. Depends on what is offered with membershp though? Maybe it wil be like some of the oter ones across the county that allow members to store and garage their track cars there?
The Dalles is big enough for lodging and it's closer. Hood River is small. Yeah, the location is OUT THERE! WTF? I like the look of it, the curves and elevation changes, but could they build it a little further away from civilization?
I assume its way out there because the land was cheap to buy. If they build it like they claim, then there will be facilities at the track for storing your cars. I assume that they will also build facilities to house people who want to stay there.
This reminds me of the proposals for new tracks at Marysville north of Everett, Bremerton, Chehalis, and Goldendale, all of which went nowhere. It is too difficult in this day and age to acquire the property and permits to build a racing facility. Don't hold your breath. It is probably the only habitat for an endangered green-eyed, red-winged moth. We should covet having PIR and do whatever is needed to keep the neighbors in north Portland happy. Ed
These proposals seem to come and go frequently in Oregon. I guess because land is super cheap and there's a decent contingent of car racing fans....and land is cheap, did I mention that? Grading and asphalt paving really doesn't cost that much so these things almost seem feasible on paper. Maybe if Les Schwab Corp. did it...? From their website: "Construction of the phase one road race course is scheduled to begin in 2007. On site rock extraction and crushing will begin as soon as complete funding has been secured." From my college buddy: "Flying to Monaco on my new Gulfstream V will begin as soon as complete funding has been secured"
I've been following a new 6.0+ mile sanctioned road course being built in Boardman, Oregon! They are breaking ground on October 25, 2007 and plan to have the course up and running in a year or early 2009. Their website is great - www.pnwmotorsportspark.com. The website is very informative, I think we need to keep an eye on this project. Heard they were going to begin taking track reservations next spring for club members and car clubs.....this is not the site that is in Sherman County, but rather right on the freeway a couple hours from Portland, Oregon. There will be hotels, condos, RV parks built - so lodging won't be a problem and there will be garage space for purchase, or lease. Finaly somewhere to go without having to fight the rainy weather all the time!
Billie, I think you would be better off starting a new thread from scratch otherwise the confusion will not end with the other park. Nice meeting you at Festa Italiana on Saturday. Michael
They do have the permits and I thought most of the funding. I haven't heard if they have actually broken ground. Since the race season is over I haven't had the chance to talk to the people in the know. And as far as the Boardman site, I know thay were at PIR during one of the last races inquiring who would want out move out there ( Business wise, race schools ect.)to support the track. I don't think thay had many positive responses.
Another new park is opening just 2 hours out of Portland, Oregon, Pacific Northwest Motorsports Park. It will have a 6.0+ mile road course with lots of curves and elevations, built to sanctioned racing standards as well as a great Kart course. Check out their website at www.pnwmotorsportspark.com. I understand they have the funds, don't have to use public financing to build and they're breaking ground on October 25, 2007. I think there is a lot of opportunity with this park over the one in Sherman County that seems to be on hold because of financing.
