Thanks for the explanation above! If I did want to go a tuned chip route, who would you recommend?

I don't have a recommendation, other than you would want a custom tune based on your dyno run data rather than an "off the shelf" chip.

They sent me some more pictures via email today, the engine is coming back together! They are currently working on cam timing and the engine should be back in the car later this afternoon. Tomorrow they set the engine balance with the SD1 computer (whatever that is) and run the injectors through their cleaning system. In one of the pictures below you can see the update chain belt tensioners which had not been changed on my car.

Good man. Did they need to drill your cam weep holes, or had that been done?

Don't know, they never mentioned it? I can ask them if you think it is important....

Thanks Dan. I have confirmed they have performed this fix as well to my car, it had not been done before.

Things are really coming back together now. Apparently I also got a new water pump. And check out the shiny hyperflows! While I'm so excited that everything is being taken care of so professionally, I am beginning to hyperventilate thinking of what the final bill will be like....

Thanks, I give all the credit to the guys at competizione since they are great about emailing me pics. I figured this thread would also help anybody getting a 30K or doing it them selves with some good visual reference points...

Good thinking. The pics of the timing chain upgrade are especially helpful.

Eric, it's looking great -- can't wait to see it in action!!

Are you picking it up Saturday? Maybe I'll stop over at Competizione with the SS.

HA! You are right. Why do you think I'm in a 348 and not an F40? :)

Engine fired up tonight!!! Here it is connected to the Ferrari diagnostic computer. Pretty cool, looks like it is attached to the mothership or the borg hive for you star trek fans :)

Interestingly Richard said the car did not appear to have been every properly adjusted and they had to adjust throttle plates, throttle potentiometers etc based on the readings from the computer. It was way off. I'm beginning to think the 30K it got in 2002 was not performed well....

I got my car back today!!!!! All I can say is WOW, what a difference. Immediately visible difference is how the engine compartment is spotless. Even the rubber tubes look brand new. Second immediate difference is that the car just idles dead on at 1000rpm. Before it always used to hunt a tiny bit maybe +/- 100rpm, but now it purrs like my 03 911. At idle, the hyperflows don't seem much louder than the stock cats with my tubi exhaust.

Then I start driving it. Mid rpm range it doesn't seem any faster than before and still lacks torque compared to the 911. But keeping the rpms at 4500 or above and flooring it, it now pulls insanely hard compared to before. The hyperflows + tubi at redline is like a wailing banshee, just insane. Whereas before this extended 30K service the car always felt noticeably slower than my 911 (320hp, awd, ~3200lbs, 5.2sec 0-60 spec) which never made sense since specs are very similar, but now it is as fast or faster from the seat of the pants point of view. It revs much more easily, it seems like you get to redline in a heartbeat and it pulls strong all the way to 7500rpm or more. Before it seemed to flatten out at the very top end. I can't wait to take this thing to the track.

They performed a full alignment too. Apparently, the car was completely out of spec. Now, the car is planted, and really behaves like it is on rails. See the alignment pics below. They recommended lowering the car 3/4" which I'll probably do the next time I'm there, they think it would handle a lot better that way.

So a happy ending to this story. Man I love this car!!!! :) :)

Looks like they did a very thorough job. If I were you, I would drive it with absolute confidence for the next 4-5 years. A trip to California - no problem. A trip to Canada - no problem That's the beauty of a well done service. :)

My next 30k due in Q1 2009 will be done at a reputable independent - I already have the right person in mind :) - an fchatter to boot. I too would like a thorough going over of everything and photos to document it for future owners to enjoy.

    Enjoy your lovely steed!

How much did this cost you - PM me if you like.

Eric, looks awesome. Congrats. Did you have them run the wheel hub dyno?

No, they recommended I do it in a couple of weeks to let everything settle in and make sure nothing is wrong. I'll go one of these saturdays....
