I just bought a 2000 360 F1 a couple months ago. The car was running perfect until a few days ago the check engine light came on. Then today I go to drive it and it'll start but when I give it gas it revs up maybe 500 rpm and then comes back to idle. In other words, it won't take the gas I'm trying to give it. Very bizarre.

Do any of you have any idea what the the problem might be????

What kind of code did the check engine light produce?

How do I check the code? Don't I need to take it to the dealer for that??

Or anyone that has the reader. More often than not the check engine light is caused by the cats. How many miles on this car? Stock Cats?

The car has stock cats, I bought it with 6000 miles, it's now at 8400.

Considering a blown engine is probably $40K, I think you might be smart to contact your dealer on Monday and have them diagnose it.

If you have (or can purchase) and OBDII reader, then you may be able to pull a code and perhaps gain some insight into what might be wrong. The one I have is the 3110:

    http://www.canobd2.com/tool/3110.asp

You might also consider clearing the ECU's (kill the power to the battery for 5 minutes when the car is cold) just to see if there is any change with anything. Make sure the gas cap is on tight as well.

The other possible issue is some problem with the F1 system and/or clutch. However, if you put the car in N, it should rev no problem. If it revs while in neutral, but not while in gear on the road, then I think it could point more towards and issue with the clutch.

Again, unless you know what you are doing and have experience with the car, then your best bet is probably to contact the dealer and have them take a look at it.

By the way, Schucks has OBD2 readers on sale right now starting at $129.

Thanks for all your responses. I'm going to try to yank the battery cable to reset the ecu. I read somewhere there is a knob in the engine compartment that does this. Anybody know where exactly that is located and if that will cut power to the ecu's??

take it back to the dealer - check the efficiency rate on your clutch. if lower than 20% then you would need to replace it.

    You guys are awesome!!!!

I disconnected the power to the positive terminal (this was between the time I got the response about the knob) and waited about fifteen minutes. Then I reconnected the terminal, crossed my fingers, started her up and Voila!!!!!!!

Problem solved, the car would rev like normal!!!! And to top it off the check engine light was no longer on. I took her for a quick hot lap, ran through the gears, and everything was fine.

I'm still puzzled as to why this happened in the first place. I have to take her in to the dealer Monday anyway for annual service, maybe they can shed some light on this.

    I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks again for your responses, you made my weekend fun again.

It may be that the ECU's cut the power due to some error code (I am not sure if the 360 has a "limp" mode or not, but perhaps that's what it was). If it happens again, then I would be careful and make sure the dealer checks it out. When you take it in, they should be able to check to see what it was.

it's limp mode to protect you from doing anything detrimental to the motor. Next time get the code read. If it's not the cats or o2 sensors and is something worse, you could potential do some damage to the engine.
