I went to a local junior college for three years then transferred to UC San Diego. All in all, it was six years for me to get a bachelor's degree which I was more than happy to end with a "B-/C+" GPA.

No college for me. I knew what I needed to know by my Senior year of high school. By the time my classmates were getting out of college, I had already worked for 4 years and was just starting my second business in the computer field.

Today, I personally don't think college is as big a deal as it was in my parents' day. These days, any flunky can get a student loan and put off real life for 4 more years. So many people use college as simply a way to post pone having to get a job and/or so they can go on a 4 year extended party (drinking, sex, etc.) that I don't think it really sets you apart from the crowd as much as it once did.

Take my field for example (computers). In my book, if you are having to learn it from a teacher in a class, then you are probably behind the curve in most cases. You have to wonder if what you learn 4 years ago will still even be applicable by the time you make it out into to the work force.

But for some people, college is good I think. If you are going to be a mechanical or electrical engineer or something along those lines, then perhaps it's helpful. Or, for example, if you are going to major in business, then taking business, law and economic courses at a good college could be worth the time, effort and expense.

For me, personally, I don't believe there is much you cannot learn (and probably faster) from a good book and/or some searches on google. If you really love your field and have a desire to learn, my view is that you typically can teach yourself faster than someone else can lead you along in a class (and save yourself the student loans in the process).

Here's a perfect example:tonight I was watching TV and listening to several physicists speak about the Universe (on the subject of gamma ray bursts as I recall) and none of them could speak correctly. I have to wonder what sort of college these people attended, if they can't even figure out whether a pronoun should be in the nominative, reflexive or objective case while attempting to explain their theories.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :)

I have to agree with Ray. I was a double major with business and comp sci. I will expand the thought though and say that some of the more foundational parts of the comp sci major can still benefit from formal education. Major languages like Oracle, SQL, SAP that have been around for a bit can I think be taught effectively by an instructor if they themselves have an intrinsic motivation to learn it. However I agree that the more recently developing fields do take some time to absorb into the curriculum.
The best way to do that is to hang out with friends who have their XBOX modified to burn games they rented onto a larger hard drive or rig up an old Apple computer to control a Sony stereo receiver using a command prompt no less :) To me that was the most interesting way to learn.
Unfortunately, those skills didnt get too much consideration by companies like IBM (or girls for that matter). For them I still needed the formal piece of paper ;)

Anyone out there currently in the SAP world?

Hell no. I ditched the JD Edwards/Oracle world a few years ago because I got very tired of implementing/coding software that I knew would never deliver on the sales promises.

Graduated from Occidental College (small private liberal arts college) in Los Angeles.

And you think learning astrophysics is easier by yourself rather than with guidance? Give me a break! Also, what you say may be true only for those who think and believe knowledge is a commodity; it's not. Learn for the sake of learning. If one has the mindset of most others today, that one must 'get a degree to get a good/better job', then alas, one might as well save one's time and not attend higher education.

When your only outlook is 'money, money, money', of course 'going to college' and spending time learning various principles in whatever discpline may be perceived as a 'waste of time' but if you are truly enthused about a certain field, as in the example you provided, such as astrophysics, there is nothing better than learning about it from the best!

And 'speaking correctly', in American English I presume, for those astrophysicists perhaps isn't second nature because many of them are experts from foreign countries. As a matter of fact, read a few papers on physics and you will see that physicists' rhetoric and diction are only second to the so-called 'literature/English' graduates.

Now if you want to give a perfect example of 'working hard, then working smart, and becoming very successful (at least monetarily speaking)', look at Stephen Wolfram; Ph.D in theoretical physics by age 20 from Caltech and advanced research in 'cellular automata' allowed him to successfully launch his business of the Mathematica line of products; launching him into the multi-millionaire status.

Although Wolfram's example may indeed be rare, one must see that getting an education can neither be trivialized nor substituted for anything else. In other words, if you can get it, get it; by any means necessary! And if truly sincere, greater opportunites lie in this so-called 'journey of life'!
