Suddenly, the blinkers on my 84 308 do not work. no noise, no lights (inside or out) There does not appear to be any other electrical gremlins. Searching the manual (p 102) there is a "relay for direction light intermittence" am I wrong to assume it is the relay? Is it an easy fix? where do I get a relay? do I need to stay at a Holiday Inn Express to fix it myself? Thanks!
Mike- Do the brake lights and wipers work? If not, it's the fuse; #1 position in the left hand fuse block.
NO, you are not wrong to assume about the relay, in fact the first thing you should check is the relay (assuming the fuses are good) The signals and the hazard light shares the same relay. Try to wiggle it around and/or pull it then push it back in the socket again.
My car does this too, intermittentally, but the HAZARDS still work. If they share the same relay, I'm thinking its a different connection. Someone (you mike?) said the blinkers run through other switches. I've got my contact cleaner, and I'll be cleaning up as many connections as I can during the conversion to birdman's fusebox. BTW same car, 84 QV US model. James in Denver
OK, I fibbed... The hazards work, but only on the passenger side. Windshield wipers don't work either. brake lights... nope. will check fuse.
You guys are geniuses... especially you Skip (I won't spread it around... you have a reputation to uphold!) Fuse essentially crumbled in my hand. can you buy these at any NAPA? Just called Napa... they got 'em. Maybe I should buy an assortment of them?
OK, I'm biased, but take a poll on the site and see what others say. Throw those crappy OEM fuseblocks in a box and buy Birdman's Fuseblocks that take a normal fuse and actually work. Not that I'm biased or anything. But don't do it for 3 weeks because I'm leaving town on business. Birdman
Maybe this has been beat to death... but how long does Birdmans conversion take? easily done by non mechanics / electrical engineers?
I was going to jump in and suggest the Birdman fuseblock upgrade, but the Bird himself did it. I'll absolutely endorse this upgrade. It is one of the first things I did when I got my 308. It's an incredibly easy upgrade, but getting rid of the old fuseblock and crappy fuses in favor of the glass fuses and solid block with clean connections is worth the effort. Also, while you are at it, treat your car to all new relays. They are not expensive, and you can get the exact replacement Bosch relays with metal cases from rockauto.com. Again, worth the time, effort and money, IMHO. Steve
Absolutely as easy as can be. His instructions are very clear, very easy. So much so that anyone can do it, even the mechanically challenged. If you know how to use a screwdriver, the whole thing should take about 1/2 hour, including running over to an auto parts store to buy the fuses.
I changed my car to Birdman's style fuseblocks within the first few months of ownership (and replaced all of the relays too), that eliminates 90% of electrical problems in these old 308 Ferraris.
Thanks guys.... fuse was replaced. Everything is fine. Large victory for a small mind! Maybe Birdman's fuse thing will be a winter project, along with that pesky S-L-O-W passenger side window (other side was fixed)...
Also don't forget the fluid: http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=6 Even if the level looks okay, experts recommend changing this based on age.
No, no joke. I used it in my 308 and it worked wonders. You have to be careful though. It's not DOT approved, so it's not legal in all 50 states. I've heard of people getting pulled over for using it.
This was a 15-minute project for my 84 QV......its, as they say, "The biggest no-brainer in the history of earth".
Also, and this may be stating the obvious, but don't use the synthetic blinker fluid in these old cars. The lens seals aren't tight enough. I've never heard of people getting cited for using it. Where was this?
Yup. Just did it. It took about 25 minutes including rounding up the two screwdrivers, marking all the electrical leads, and moving them. I also had a couple of aftermarket crimped connectors that I didn't like, so I replaced them. I also disconnected my stereo and cut-out an old underdash hidden radar detector. It's really simple stuff. Just do it and don't worry. H
