I think it fell out of my pocket on the golf course today. I am going back tomorrow to see if anyone turned it in. Failing that, what are my options. It was the folding TR key for 1986 Testarossa. I had ordered blanks so I would have a spare, but never got around to making dups. (Yes... I know ... DUMB). Image Unavailable, Please Login
On newer cars you can call the dealer and with your vin number and they can cut it some how. Might not work with a Ferrari.
I would think a lock smith could make a duplicate with his special tools he has. Not sure. off topic question. Why does the key bend or has the hinge type handle on it?
This happened to me. I had blanks, so I removed the door handle assembly and bought it to a locksmith.
You might be able to give the blank and the picture above to a good locksmith and they can cut it for you. There is a place, keysforclassics.com, that sells generic Ferrari keys and you can send him a picture and with the picture he'll send you a set of properly cut keys.
If you've ever sat in a 355 or TR your knee will get gouged by a straight key fob if you are not careful.......I have and it hurts. And yes....an experienced older locksmith should be able to copy the key from the lock cylinder. I have had it done before.
FOUND MY KEYS ! I left them in the men's room. I went to Ace Hardware with my blanks (that I had ordered back in June) and had two copies made today. They work like a charm. I have a couple of extra blanks if anyone is interested. Funny, I didn't notice the "FOR FIAT" until I took this pic. Whew... Image Unavailable, Please Login
PM me your shipping info and they are yours. Consider it one ferrari brother helping another. Keep in mind these are FIAT blanks, but work great for the TR as well.
Heh. I've got the same thing. We will have to ride our TRs together someday - if I ever get this one running correctly, that is.
There is a company out of australia that makes new keys if you send them you're key code. I found them via ebay, but you can contact them directly. I got 2 ignition keys made for my 308 and received them in about 1 1/2 weeks and all I had to do was email them the key code. I'm going to order new door/louver keys for my car from them as soon as I can. I would recommend them. http://www.keysforclassics.com/ BTW This is not a sales pitch, I have no business interest in the company, just liked the keys James in Denver
Dear Ferraristi, I've ordered a couple of spares for my TR from my local F pimp. ( Ferrari Of Central Florida ) They are the original folding horsey keys. You just give them your VIN + proper ownership verfication and they can order them for you. It takes about a couple of weeks. ....about 85.00 each. I believe FNA does it in the US BTW, did the same for my Diablo Roadster....took 5 weeks ....115.00 each ....and one didn't fit so well ( hahahahahh ) Done at Lamborghini factory Shamile Freeze....Miami Vice
Be really careful not to lose keys for these things. I had the lock out of a 308 I got as a spare with no keys. I took it all over town and called in the yellow pages trying to find a locksmith that could make a key. They couldnt, or mostly wouldnt do it. They didnt wanna touch it. I contacted Lake Forest in Chicago, they gave me a number of a place in California that made keys exclusively for Ferrari if you lost them. They said they probably couldnt do it either without the code, its just to difficult, they probably will break it, not responsible if they do. Maybe the newer ones are easier, maybe I didnt talk to the right Ferrari dealer, but either way, you could be totally screwed if you away from home somewhere and lose your keys, like an insane gf who throws them in the lake for you. 2 weeks waiting for a key wont be fun either. And if you let Bozo's key service take a crack at it and they break it, which they all said was a high possibility, well, you dont wanna know what a new ignition lock costs. Key blanks are lots cheaper guys. And the door locks, at least on the 308, are a different key than the door, so they wont work for you either. A good locksmith though can read you key, and they have information to calculate the original lock code. Then they can make a key from code and when they get it to work, they give you the code . You should do that and write it down somewhere. With that code you stand a much better chance being able to have a key made if somehow you lose them. DO NOT allow anyone to make an "impression" with a metal key blank. They will probably break your lock.
They couldnt, or mostly wouldnt do it. You could have stopped right there. It was done for me, and nobody said anything about breaking locks. They did go through another key blank, but they just used a Fiat key blank. It was the same thing that I had. What is quality? - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Well... back in 1987, my friend who had a 328GTS was told that the key bends, in order to accommodate people with long legs, ... if the key sticks out too much, it can rub against their knee....causing discomfort.... hence... by having a hinge type key, you can gain that extra 1/2 inch, and make your driving experience so much more pleasurable... uhh... yeah...thats it...
