My initial searches didn't seem to reveal detail in the way I have grown accustomed to around here :). Anyone replace the fan motors in front of the radiators?

I noticed again today mine are growling something awful. From what I know mine are considered "upgraded" so they are not OEM but sounding bad all the same.

Looks like maybe the fan can be removed, then with the blades and grill removed the motor can slide out. Am I on the right track?

    Slainte!

The 308 radiator fans are easy to refurbish. Remove the grill & fans noting wire connection positions and roughly note their position regards distance to the radiator and housing rotation (not critical but saves head scratching upon replacing). Removing the horn may be necessary. Spread the mounting clamp a bit and hold your tongue right to get the fan through the opening with blades intact.

If you are squimish about working on the motor you may wish to oil the bearings to end the motor noise at this point but I would encourage you not to quit here.

Remove the motor shell (2 screws). Inspect the brushes and replace them if necessary (I needed to on one fan). Small motor service shops carry brushes for about $10/pair and they can advise you about necessity if you are uncomfortable here. Clean and re-oil bearings with 3:1 oil.

Replace the clamshells and adjust the endplay screw if it has one. Use a 12v source to test each fan, noting the rotational direction for pushing air. Replace the fans, horn, grill. And when you get them going again do an operational check.

I.e. double check the direction of the fan blades to insure they are indeed forcing air INTO the radiator. Reversing the wires at some point in their history is not out of the question.

Assuming no brushes are required its a 2 hour job at most.

have you given any thought to installing hayden fans? they move alot more air and i think the cost is about what you'd pay for motors. there's a thread about it.

I did it the real cheap way, but its great, A trip to the junkyard, a walk to the fan shelf, and found some nissan pulsar fans, the same dia. motor as the ferrari clamp bracket ,and a really much bigger set of blades , alot more pitch, they really move twice as much air,it seems to run cooler for a longer time.Easiest job i ever did!

I replaced mine with SPALs. I also added a puller fan to the oil cooler in the engine bay. I had to make some mods up front though, removing the stock brackets and fabricating new ones, as well as removing the shroud from the SPAL fans altogether. They cool much better because they produce SO MUCH more air flow over the stock fans.

Leave it to me to keep driving hundreds of miles. Now one is screaming like a banshee so I have taken it apart. Well, almost. I can't seem to get the fan blade off. What is the next step after removing the outer nut and washers?

    Thanks,

I put new modern 12" pusher fans on (shock, horror!). Worked magic for cooling on 115 degree days.

One more thing on the modern fans. They push about three times as much air as stock fans, and they draw about half as many amps as the stock fans.

I removed my stock fans, and replaced with 2 new Spal fans. I bought the biggest Spal fans that would fit, and had to remove the fans from there protective valance in order to make them fit. I had to remove the stock mounting brackets and fabricate my own, but that was relatively straightforward.

The new Spals push a tremendous volume of air over the radiator, much more so than the stocks ever did. I also added a puller fan to the rear oil cooler, which works off the same relay as the front fans.

Here's the link to the thread where I have some pictures: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35703

Mine is indeed stamped LUCAS - ENGLAND. (Sir John Lucas, who Jaguar owners dubbed the Prince of Darkness! :):))
I'm going to try and re-lube the one I have. But, if that doesn't work is there a part number, or just search for a 74 XKE?

I also am attracted to the idea of something like the Hayden fans, but less sure of my skill improvising the install.

Now, here's an area that I'm very well verse in -- Jaguar XKE auto parts. Having owned several of them including a Ser. III V-12, I've dealt with the Prince of Darkness and fan issues on multiple cars.

There are several good suppliers for Jaguar parts, and price shopping is encouraged: SNG Barratt (New Hampshire), XK's Unlimited (California), Welsh Enterprises (Ohio), Coventry West (Georgia? NC?), to name just a couple. And there is a guy who has been making specialty products for the Jaguars, and in particular fan upgrades for the XKEs. His website is: www.coolcatcorp.com. Not sure if he is doing Ser. III fans, but it is possible his Ser. II fan upgrade might work on the 308s. I have used his fans on several XKEs and they are truly excellent, move much more air than the stock fans.

BTW, Do you know why the British drink warm beer?? Because Lucas makes their refrigerators. And now for the Lucas jokes......

    Seamus,

You can't go by the part numbers. The numbers used by those websites are usually the Jaguar parts numbers, not Lucas.

That is the Ser. III fan motor. The Ser. III motors are pretty durable. Most of the Ser. III cars I know of, and the ones I've owned, all had original fans and they worked great. The new ones are good quality too.

I didn't look closely at the Ferrari fan picture, but this fan motor goes into a compression mounting bracket in the radiator shroud. It does not have an integrated bracket on the motor housing itself. You also need to check that the fan blade will mount up as well on that shaft. And the connectors on the motor are an old fashioned "button" type snap together connector, so you might have to change that was well, but that's not a big deal. I'd suggest using a push-in connector so that you can switch leads if necessary to reverse the fan direction.

Yep, note even the wire connectors and note on polarity are the same........true enough if you reverse them it runs backwards.....I played with mine on the battery for awhile.....

    Bushings were shot.

That is the EXACT same motor...I'm telling ya, it went right in......that's about what I paid also to my friends at European Cars, Ltd here, the Jag shop wanted $250 which I guess is retail $$$$.

My buds passed it thru at cost with tax added.....

On my 1985 308gtsi Qv, I am going to replace my OE fans with the Hayden fans. I was looking for the thread on installing Hayden fans, but have not found it. Anybody know where to find it? Thank you

Yes, great ideas, keep them coming.

I live in the deep south so I plan to keep the condensor and maybe revive the AC someday. I drove 100 miles to Graylyn in 90 degree heat Saturday which is what started this mess. I thought spirits accompanied me on the ride home the wailing was so much.

One fan I was able to revive this evening. The other's wiring grommet disintegrated into dust which is probably a good indication these pups are spent, though I mind not letting the "good" one have another go at it.

I put in an order with XK's Unlimited only to have them call me back telling me it is back ordered per omnia saecula saeculorum.
