No, I am not advocating it. But I watched some tv shows recently, and was facinated by the brilliance of some thieves...and I thought of this. Should make for fun conversation.

I remember years ago at our local mall, thieves placed a large metal deposit box in front of the mall bank. It was afterhours, and the mall stores usually just placed the days reciepts/cash in the bank deposit drop box at the end of the day. Well, the thieves placed a sign on the bank drop box stating that it was broken, and to please use the adjacent temporary box. Well, people did. In the morning the temporary box was gone, as was a huge sum of money.

Brilliant, and very low risk for the thieves. They were never caught.

There was a show on tv a couple of weeks ago, about a guy who recieved one of those checks in the mail for 5$, which could be cashed if he signed up for some service or the other. Well, he took the routing number off the check, and made himself a new checkbook, with that number. He wrote checks for YEARS before getting caught. Stole hundreds of thousands of dollars. Apparantly the bank had no way of balancing the books with an advertising scheme like this, as most of the 5$ checkes never got cashed. The guy just kept withdrawling, and the bank kept paying.

Not sure how he got caught...probably got greedy.

Any other brillaint thieves out there? :)

And no, I am not advocating theft. But it is amazing how some folks manage to come up with innovative ideas...

You should write a book called "If I did it."
That would be a pretty good way to steal some money, AND get away with it.

I've always wondered how successful these thieves might be if they channeled their innovation into something positive. Must be a nick in a gene somewhere.

Another great show on TV is called "Masterminds." They detail how a master criminal got away (and usually got caught, though not always) with their great plans. Some people were amazing, but the majority were usually done in by an accomplice that either got caught and turned them in, or got greedy and the cops followed the trail to the main thief.

I have always thought if you are gonna go, go big. So my first choice would be Fort Knox where all the gold is. Only probelm is there are 40K US Army troops stationed there along with a tank brigade, and I hear the only way to get it out is by truck or rail and the rail spur is 2- miles away.
So how about an armored truck? I hear they have at least $600K in cash on certain days more on busy one's.

Thermite, it can melt straight through an engine block. Could theoretically be used to burn through an atm lock.

    Little known facts...

Only 10% of bank robbers are ever caught.

Average 'take' from a bank robbery? Around $2,000

both of those numbers seem awfully small, i figured at least there'd be amounts in the 10's of thousands lost (although i know no bank is dumb enough to keep a large amount of money behind the counter)

How about some software code that could rip off a company for a bunch of money. This one's pretty brilliant...what it does is, when there's a bank transaction, interests are computed in the thousands a day in fractions of a cent, which it usually rounds off. Well, this takes those remainders and puts it into your account.

    Wait, this sounds familiar...

You would be surprised. If you get in a bank at the right time on friday when the count is going on, there is usually at least 30k behind the counter getting counted.
