    Hi

Just joined the forum and i must say i have been missing a brilliant site.

I own a chairs and flares Dino 246GT and have just rebuild the engine around 2 months ago.

Ron at Superformance has convinced me that the BSM programmable ignition system is the best way forward. What this guy doesn't know about Dino's isn't worth knowing......So i listened and parted with my money. It has transformed the car but i think there is more to come.

My question is, has anybody had experience of mapping the ignition curves with high compression pistons (10.5:1) without a rolling road it is tedious to keep trying different configurations.

Mike and Adele have retired now.

Down to Colin and Ron. Seems like the place is expanding quite considerably. Good prices, good service and Ron makes a nice cuppa.

    Thanks Nerodino

The BSM unit was £1175+VAT inc new disy etc. Took along time as i had to work out most of the wiring and install myself. Simple and very effective in the end

Ron does a very thorough job on his engines and takes a lot of pride doing them. I have watched him many times, i was very fortunate that he helped me re-build my V6 over the winter. Nice guy and very modest.

My car and the new engine / gearbox nearing completion.

If you do your rebuild think about HC pistons, they make a really big difference mid range power.

I know it shouldn't be that colour but it was rather tatty and Superformance didnt have any new ones in stock....so i painted it gold heat resistant as it was all i had at the time. Wasn't intentional but i liked it so i left it that colour!!!!

    Cheers

Thanks for the tip on HC pistons i will go for those. I will do all the ancillary stuff on the engine myself but i am ill equiped to do the head and block and furthemore i have never done this myself anyway and would be nervous of damaging something by not puting it back together properly! these engines are too precious for an amateur like me to bugger up.
Did you get Ron to help you at your premises? and also how long have you had your car how much have you done to it and what serial no is she? Sorry for being so nosy!

The only slight issue i have with the HC pistons at the moment is slight pinking under load, ie 2500rpm in top. May need to remap ignition timing at this range or it could be finding a better HO fuel, Optimax was suggested somewhere?

I fell in love with the dino when i first see one in 1968, still think it the prettiest and sexiest car on the planet, so I bought 06866 in 1998. It was in a rather tatty condition, the bodywork / chassis was luckily free from rust. The original owner must have given it a liberal coating of Dynatrol all under the chassis as it is nearly perfect [for a 30+year old car]. The bodywork especially the flared arches were badly chipped so i had her resprayed a few years ago.

I have replaced the carpets and side door panels / bulkhead cover and refurbished the front and rear suspensions completely. This year was the biggest project as the 2nd gear synchro had got worse so i decided to replace the sychro's over the winter. While the engine and gearbox where parted i thought it would be a good idea to check the rest of the engine. It didn't need it , but i had the engine rebored honed and balanced by Gosnays with new HC pistons

I did all the work myself but took the gearbox and block / heads for Ron to rebuild after i had cleaned and refurbished them. The remaining engine assembly is pretty straightforward from there on really. A new undertray was fitted after i had dynatrol waxed the underside.

Alot of incidental items have been changed such as header tank, water pipes, hoses, exhausts etc. Most of these were pretty well beyond there sell by date so embarked on a proactive maintenance course rather than re-active. Some ot the gauges didn't work and the chrome rings / black bezels were damaged, these were fully refurbished by speedy cables in Wales. Excellent job, they came back like new

This winter i want to finish of replacing the dash material with the original material

Although i really admire those that fully restore their cars, as seen on the other article, something stops me doing it to 06866. She has been well looked after [too much according to my wife] and i try to drive her as much as i can. If she was that clean i doubt i would take her out!!

One of the biggest steps i took was to have her laser aligned. A firm in Maldon Essex did it and i can tell you it transformed the car. Before it was very skittish and understeered. Not driving the car hard, it didn't worry me unduly, but once i refurbed the front suspension i got it checked. Wasn't suprised at how far out the setup was because of the work done, but what really impressed me was how well the car handled afterwards. A complete revelation, like a go kart on rails now. They had all the shims for Ferraris so were able to do it within 2 hours. [they do all Terry Hoyles cars, that was good enough for me] Best £180 i spent

What are you doing to your engine?

    Tony

    PS Thanks for the interest.

    Tony,
Thats good info on the laser alingment. I shall go for that when the time comes.
Have you researched the availability of the CORRECT mousehair, as we have had many a debate on here and basically it appears non available!
My engine from 07528 has only covered a genuine(i think!) 58k from new so i dont expect it to be too worn but as the rest of the car is being "nut and bolted" it makes sense to have the engine and box completely rebuilt as necessary. I dont want to take it out again in a hurry!
    Regards, Graham.

To be honest i don't know what was original. Although my car has a rather faded mousehair type material I am assured by Superformance what they sell is as close to the original as possible. I would rather fit this than cover it with leather or vinyl. Just doesn't look right IMHO.

I did the gearbox and was suprised at the amount of work needed especially the diff bearings, these were starting to break up. So caught it just in time.

Would love to see your car once its finished.

USD $2650.00 for an ignition system?
My Permatune only cost USD $475, the MSD on Dino #2 cost half that...

    Hi

I realise now there are alternatives bought it before i got on this site.

Can you explain what is involved with both systems you mention. Does it have a brand new disy?

    Could not agree more!

I have the HC pistons from superformance in my car, made a nice difference in the power, nice flat torque band from 3500 rpm to 6500 rpm, with a dlight drop off to 7000.

DM - Do you run a convential disy or prog. ignition system?

The advanced curves you set into the controller seem to be a bit of trial and error especially with HC pistons. Worked fine on the old set up, works better now but still find i have a few problems (slight pinking) on the mid range -low range. Just re-built the engine so i cannot explore the top end like you.....yet!!!

What fuel do you use as i do not seem to dial this out

Standard 3 lobe Euro Distributor in my US car. Made the switch at the same time as the engine work.

I run gas at 92 or 93 octane. Occasionally I pump a tank of 100 octane in, so I probably am at about 94 octane US.
