Anyone living in Manhattan, I was just curious to know how you went about choosing which parking garage you keep your prized posession in, is it a big deal? do you just store it at a garage with the closest proximity? service? quality? reputation? I know some are even blessed with having parking right under their building which is a real home run.

I'm one of those blessed with my garage being under my building. I am pretty happy with the staff there and they seem to take good car of the car. its been over three months and no dings or scratches so I'm not compaining.

When I do park in the city, I park at the office lot (it's not really a lot, it's in the basement of my office,) just cause we get some "discount" (haha yea right discounted NYC parking.)

I'd do anything to own an apartment in this new building in Chelsea with elevator car parking.

When I lived in TriBeCa, I had a VERY choice spot. To the left was a concrete wall. To the right was a concrete wall. Plenty of room to keep the car in. I had a little light that helped me back in to place. I kept a small rubber tote with some supplies in there (ie: The car cover when it was not on the car, some Sprayway, etc.)

Best bet is to walk around your neighborhood and look around the garages. Talk to the guys. The closest will not be the best. The best is some combination of a garage crew that you can actually speak to (ie: minimal language barrier) and kind of spot they can provide. Remember to file for your NYC resident parking tax credit!

A couple key things to keep in mind if you are going to keep your car in an NYC garage:

    1) Invest in bumper covers to avoid getting those wonderful 'notches' in your bumpers from the parking attendants shuffling the cars around.

    2) Tip nicely and frequently. If you are parking in a garage which is not your 'home' garage, it is more important to tip when you are leaving your car, not when you are picking it up. They will usually park it in a prime spot for you.

    3) Be friendly with the attendants in the garage. Treat them like crap - and they will show the same respect to your car.

    4) Some places will hand wash your car for you (usually $20) - but speak to the manager about it when he's alone. A lot of places forbid it, but as long as you keep it hush hush, they will do it for you.

Are you looking to keep it in a particular area of Manhattan (ie: Midtown, Upper East Side, Downtown, etc.)? Can give recommendations for certain garages based on your location...

I've used 3 garages for monthly spots in the last 3 years. I ended up switching garages about a year ago to one a few blocks away simply because they would let me park the car myself. The attendants have a spot for me that has nobody next to me and they never move the car. The price? Well let's just say I have to grease some major palms in conjunction with the monthly parking fee. One tip that people haven't mentioned: NYC Parking Tax. If you don't register your car in NYC and change your address on license to NYC, you will pay 18.75% tax! So make sure you file for the resident parking tax abatement.

It's in Chelsea, 200 Eleventh Avenue and it's currently under construction I believe.

You can watch the parking-elevator demo on their website.

the one closest is definitely not the best! I was walking to dinner the other night and passed the garage next door... well one of the attendants was backing a brand new S6 onto the elevator and hit the side ripping off the mirror, and making 3 foot long gash on the passenger's side. the guy didn't stop to look... he didn't even seem surprised! needless to say i won't ever use that garage! 76th and york.

I live smack dab in SoHo on greene, and they are closing garages like mad around my neighborhood.

I have used a garage in tribeca on Moore, off of Varick. I was pretty happy with it, noticed a Roush stang there along with a green Lambo, Aston, etc. I am now using a place on Mulberry & Spring; the attendants there are really nice. I'm happier with the Mulberry street garage than the tribeca one, just because of the attendants, so they get my business.

    Tip. lol...tip them...

I have been parking my car here on upper west side on Trump street(riverside Blvd) for 4 years now. The company that would let you have a space to park your own car would be Quick Park. Although you have to pay them $50 cash to the manager but is well worth it since you never have to wait for them to pull up your car or taking the risk of them scratching it.
