Been thinking if I had to choose one classic and one modern, what these two cars would be, cost not being an issue, this isnt meant to be one of those list 100 dream car threads but a realistic motivation as to why you would choose those two cars.

If one looks back there have been a phenomenal ammount of great cars.

For me the classic would definately be the F40.
    Reasons being:
-it to me represents everything that made Ferrari great, a bare basic racing car for the road
-those looks, standing next to one its hard not to feel like you are in the presence of greatness, its not a pretty car in a conventional sense but but it surely is agressive.
    - the last car signed off and launched by Enzo Ferrari, a car that was the first to blast past 320 km/h

Modern, and not much surprise here: 599 GTB, some people dont care for the looks but when you stand next to it, admire the shape it has more appealing lines.
-Enzo derived V12 gives it a great soundtrack and immense power
-interior that remains driver orientated but luxurious enough to be habitable on an everyday basis.
    - the fact that for the first time Ferrari have combined the passion with truly cuttign edge technology and luxury to create a cars that has few peers as an all round package

Both my choices are high end cars but I might be niever but its definately a dream worth working towards.

hmm, it's hard to choose one each. especially with a faimly, so for me it'd be a few models.
    The classics,
    365 GTS/4
    330 GTC/S
    275 GTB/C
    and then more modern
412i yes I do like the looks and the back seats are needed
    F40 obvious
Mondial - the start of my collection
    456 a GT 2+2 cruiser, I really can't see the downside here.
    612 the theme continues :D

An F40 is a "classic?" What happened to the previous 40 years of Ferrari's history?

    Classic Street: 275 NART spider
Modern: Enzo (which I would sell, and buy a daytona spider).

If we're just talking Ferraris here, then I'd have to go 275 GTS/4 NART Spider and 430 Spider.

if not just Ferraris, I'd probably go Duesenberg SSJ (Gary Cooper's car) and 430 Spider. In both cases, it would provide two sporting roadsters that can actually be driven in modern traffic/tours. The "classics" are rare and very well known, but share engines/trans with other models, so parts can be sourced (and even created from original blueprints, in the case of the Duesenberg.)

The F430 Spider is affordable to maintain, or at least more affordable than, say an Enzo, Bugatti or McLaren F1.

Vintage: 250 GT California Spyder SWB (well, you said money no object...)
Classic: F40 (yeah, it's not so new, but it was the last Ferrari that put a lump in my throat...)
Modern: 550 (smoking hot - last Pininfarina design that didn't need a "Well you have to see it in person in this color at a certain time of day" disclaimer attached to it)

    Lol.

OK, is "more affordable to maintain than an Enzo" a useful benchmark?

It's like "less nerdy than an AMC Pacer".

My pair: A Challenge Stradale and its great-grandmother, the Dino 246.

The small, light, mid-engine Ferrari... in a beautiful curvy body... with a sensuous sound...
the original and the ultimate. :D

    My thoughts exactly!

I was thinking maybe a Lusso or Cali Spyder.

    For the modern one, hmmmmmmmmm.

I'll stick with my minivan. LOL

I think 410SA has it nailed, although in my case I'd consider 9437 and a new 612.

For me it would be a 612 Scaglietti and either 3413 GT or 4675 GT.

Simply because they are rather usable and beautifully understated.

IMWO ("W" stands for worthless, BTW) classics' would be pre '73.

Not just Ferrari, but for almost all makes.

70'/71' was the real death of muscle in America. Some models and makes held out until '72. Euro cars were still pretty potent into '74, but overall pre '75 is where the overall group of classics' reside.

An F-40, while a fantastic car is far from being a "classic" ..... that is of course unless you were born after 85'........
