It's a photograph sent by Press Agency Keystone with a "phototelegraphic apparatus" called in French "belinographe" invented in 1907 per Edouard Belin.

The process used consisted in translating the white and the blacks which make a photograph in aural signals declining itself of shrill (the white) with most low (black). With the other end of the line, a receiver again converted these aural signals into visible signals, thus reconstituting emitted photography.

It's the ancestral telecopier or email with photography in attachment.

Thus, the subscribed newspapers with Keystone press, received a faxed message and a photograph; this one was cut to illustrate one sporting news.

Beautiful and rare authentic document, thanks.

p.s. Excuse me for bad translation and this digression.

During the race a stone shattered the windscreen and so much air was getting into the car that the back window was acting like an air-brake. So the back window was removed and after the race Gendebien made a little joke out of the situation.

I am going to guess 1968 GP of France at Rouen - Chris Amon in Car #24.

I have recently found both old photos of new cars and new photos of old cars at www.Vscca.org. A lot of snap shots, but some neat cars as well, including 250 GTO, 166MM, Monza etc. Scroll down for older photo sections.

Dial up beware - Some of these pages link to up to 1000 thumbnails per page!

No, it is French GP 1968 Rouen. Looks like this year's Japanese GP.

The old pits at Spa step down far more than what is shown here. The rain does match up well though. This Rouen race was won by Ickx, but was marred by the loss of Jo Schlesser.

i can add two pictures from the private album of the Köchert familiy. Gotfrid Köchert was an austrian gentleman racer and owned some great ferrari like 250 TR (0748TR), 250 GTO (3527GT), 500 TRC (0686MDTR) and 250 LM (05845).
the first pic shows Köchert in the 500 TRC at the nürburgring 1957.
the second pic is from the private album too, but we could not identify the car. it is none of the above named cars. Köchert drove a loaned works-testarossa in pretty bad condition 1958 at the gaisberg hillclimb and in zeltweg. i think, this is the pictured car. what car (S/N) is it exactly ???

please respect the copyright of the Köchert family and use of these pics only for private matters !!!

Isn't Rouen flat? ... no I've since checked.

This site shows colour photos of the 1968 race and it was not that wet and also Ickx was wearing a blue helmet not a silver/grey/light coloured one: http://www.forix.com/8w/rouen-68.html

Here is a picture of Ickx leading Surtes: http://www.forix.com/8w/rouen/68-ickx-surtees-rodriguez-f1.jpg
Hers is Ickx taking the chequered flag: http://www.forix.com/8w/rouen/68-ickx-win-f1.jpg

    Hmmm ... ???
