I took these on my flight...near the Dumbarton area I believe Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The one that sticks out in my mind is the 280 overpass above 101 in San Jose with no ramps on either side. How long between the time that was built and when the freeway was built to actually use it - 20 years? I also remember when a car appeared on it one day (and I heard that the guys at the Bigge Crane storage lot just off the freeway there swore that they knew nothing about it ).
I remember that in '79 when I first moved to San Jose, and remember the car. I was thinking what kind of structure is this>? LOL 101 and 237 were a 2 lane highway both ways back in the day.
drew: nice shots of the salt ponds. Another icon now that I see it: Moffet Field dirigible hanger! And remember the old "Moffett drive in" theater sign/movie screen in Mountain View along 101 ? Yes, I do recall the "overpass to nowhere". I thought it was odd when I first saw it during the summer of 1980 when I moved down to San Jose (SJSU.) Another icon which no longer exists: the big "S" at Masonic & Geary Blvd. - Sear Roebuck. One of the highest neon signs in the city.
Use to watch the 4th of July fireworks from my roof @ Moffet Field! Here are some more....Mountain View's dump closed in 1983 to create Shoreline Ampitheatre, Old Mill shopping center (now condos) and across the tracks was San Antonio Mall (which I think turned into an HP office), Cow Palace, and can an event like "Day on the Green" be an icon also?
Remember Marine World in Redwood City. I think that is where Oracle is at now. The sign still says Marine World Pkwy...
CLASSIC BUSINESS GINGLES: "See Ellis Brooks today, for your Chevrolet, corner of Bush and Van Ness, we got a deal for you............." Add ones you can reember! This is becoming a pretty good thread!
Oh, we're into Bay Area TV icons now? Okay... How about Marty Sherman and George (which I always thought sounded like three people instead of a man and his horse!) of the Sawmill furniture store.
I'm paraphrasing here, and spelling phonetically, but here goes: Fung Lum owner: ...So come to Fung Rum restaurant at xxxx Bascom Abenue. Announcer: How do you say that again? FLo: BASCOM Abenue!
You guys remember the ( I believe) it was Debartolo Furniture commercial where at the end he would say "Hi Kids" or was it "Bye Kids". Another blast from past was "Creature Feature" on KTVU Channel 2 and the same guy was "Captain Cosmic"! Captain Cosmic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwMQt9LUP5I
Ok what about Tom Shane for the Shane Company, now you've got a friend in the diamond business. I swear I hear his voice on the radio at least once a week.
Vik - IIRC, he said "Hi kids!" at the beginning of the spot, and "Bye kids!" at the end. I could be wrong though - long time ago... I was thinking about this thread earlier and I remembered Falafel's Drive-In. Guess what I was craving for dinner? (and yes, that's what I had for dinner tonight)
I sorta recall that too. Was that the "Hi, Kids, Dave at the Diamond center. No credit, low credit, no problem!.... Bye Kids." I'm not sure but "Dave" just seemed too sleazy to me!!!
I have a HUGE number of indian family and friends. Everytime one of them comes to town they want me to take them to Falafel Drive Inn. You guys remember The Brake Doctor commercials on tv? It would have the owner and his two sons. I used to party with the sons back in the early 90's. This is a really fun thread. Brings back all kinds of memories!
what about the AAMCO commercials... double A M C O... van driving down the street and the tranny is coming apart and laying down parts on the road...LOL
