Well sorta: McLaren will end up paying about 52 million USD to the FIA. The remaining 48 million remains with FOM for redistribution to the teams. Of that money 35 million USD will go to Spyker, which now became the 10th and final team to get TV money after McLaren was thrown out. Nice windfall. To give some perspective: 35 mio is about half of their planned (not actual) operating budget for 2007. Source: BusinessF1 October issue Does anybody know whether the 100 million fine was announced before or after the Spyker team was sold? Sounds like somebody got the short end of the stick.
Sounds like a redistribution of wealth to me, or even a subsidy of non-factory teams. I wonder if we will see a future trend of this - greater oversight of team behavior, an increase in the levying of financial penalties and fines that go to continued support of less capitalized race teams. This is a scary thought.
It is a scary thought, but I don't think we will see more of this because: a) the FIA is very inconsistent in its rulings b) this was a personal feud between Mosley and Dennis c) Toyota and Spyker have been found with documents from other teams and nothing ever happened. I'm not defending McLaren, but I doubt there will be another case like this.
This piqued my interest. Where did the feud come from? Does it go back to a driver/employment relationship?
I can't give you a good answer. I really don't know. They never had business together, so I think it might be more of a power thing. If I come across something in the future, I'll post it. Good question.
For some reason I have it that Max was the person who first hired Ron as a Formula 1 mechanic way back in the 70s. I'm sure I'm totally wrong but that popped into my mind.
I would bet that that is the total money Spyker will receive for finishing 10th,which they would not have gotten without the Mclaren penalty, not actually the amount of the Mclaren money they will get. It makes a good news story to say they are getting 35 of the 48 million. So apparently first place is good for 48 mil. and tenth is probably about 30 (before the extra Mclaren money). That is more fair then I would have expected.
I dont see it as being such a huge problem. How is the sport going to stay alive when two teams dominate and the little fishes trying to get in have tiny bugets compared to the other teams... and they lose 50mm a year. It is trying to even the playing field just a little little bit. Its not like spyker will be profiting from this 35mm they will be paying off some of their debt
No. It has more to do with the fact that, to quote Mosley, "McLaren received information on a daily basis for over three months plus a dossier of 780 pages from a spy in its main rival. It was for this they incurred a record sanction and expulsion from the Constructors' Championship."
There was definitely some sort of a feud going on way before this espionage business, so don't try and turn this whole topic into another spy saga debate.
I was just restating some facts. Do you prefer we turn this topic (Spyker getting more money as a result of FIA ruling) into a re-hashing of hearsay, gossip and speculation?
think it has to do with the manufacturer teams trying to get together and buck F1. ferrari was the holdout. payback is a *****.
That is correct, plus the fact that Mosley and Dennis rarely see eye to eye on the changes for the cars in the upcoming seasons. Mosley really is the beyotch in trying to dumb down F1.
Don't forget that all the other team were earning tv money throughout the season, which is why McLaren don't need to pay the full $100m. So its really not $35m of the $48m. The $35m figure marks the increase from zero dollars to 10th place.
