    8.3 liter engine!? Did they butcher a 288GTO or is there something about Ferrari engines I don't know? Nevertheless, 1830hp is kind of... impressive... :eek:

    It's a 308 with a 288GTO body and a bored and stroked big block Chevy engine.

    It was made for top speed runs. In '88 the car had a can am engine and it looked great with its factory GTO body, but then he kept changing stuff in the car and it looks like a race car now.

    "Bow tie big block" would mean they stuffed a chevy crate motor in it! 511 cu.in. with twin turbo would definitely get 1800+ hp.

    Dont see the point but to each his own.

    If you read to the end, the whole car has been replaced with race parts and "18 wheeler" type turbos on a chevy engine.. with a Ferrari body....

    I agree with MButner, what's the point?! This is no more than a huge engine on wheels with a Ferrari body... surely great from a purely technical point of view, but.. well.. no. ;)

    The point would be to capture the AA/blown modified sport car world speed record. No other reason. The car is not drivable for anything other. Needs to be towed to 60mph before the engine can even engage.

    Iteresting choice of car to try for a speed record.

    IIRC, that chassis was one of Bob's early (poss. the first) 288 conversions, which used a stretched 308 chassis as the factory did. It gained the Bow-tie blocks later, in the search for more power for the record runs. Eventually, it even ran through a Lenco air-shifted transmission (basically, a modified drag-strip unit) to handle the torque and high-speed requirements.

    Bob also created a front-engined, 512-block-based, turbocharged 308 Funny Car. The turbo itself was bigger than a dinner plate.

    For those who don't know, Bob's pre-Ferrari background was drag racing, and he's always game for pushing the envelope, with the ability to pull it off in most cases.

    I always thought Ferrari built engines and put car bodies around them. Does putting a Ferrari body around another engine still qualify as a Ferrari?!

    Driving on the salt is a little like driving on hard dirt. Traction is one of the big challenges, especially at higher speeds where aerodynamic drag plays a bigger and bigger role.

    That story was eloquently written but I question whether you could really get that kind of horsepower to the (rather slippery) ground with a car that seems to want to fly.
