So I mountain bike about 6-8 miles a day. Today I went down this pretty freakin' steep hill and I was picking up a lot of speed, despite trying to slow down. The hill was all pretty good size rocks (size of your fist up to the size of a soccer ball). Well I nailed one and flew over the handlebars. I probably only went about 10 feet in the air forward but somersaulted and landed sort of on my back but on the left side. I was totally winded - couldnt barely breathe. I thought I broke my wrist too, but after laying a moment it was OK.

When I got up I have some seriously gross cuts on my calf, my thigh, my ass, my back/shoulder and my arm. It stings like hell but its ok. That was about 5 hours ago.

Well now its starting to hurt when I breathe in all the way. I can breathe in most of the way no problem, but when I go all the way I get this sharp stinging pain in the center of my chest but on the back side (but not on the surface, feels like its "inside"). I've been poking my ribs and none of them hurt at touching. I think maybe its just a bruised muscle? I really f-ed up my leg and back - looks like someone went to work on me with a cheesegrater.

Did I mention it really stings?

Yes of course if it gets worse or hasnt gotten better by tomorrow I will go to the hospital, I am not self diagnosing on F-chat - but if anyone broke a rib what did it feel like?

Sorry to hear, hope you get better, hope nothing's broke. I've only broken a few fingers but when I have, they always swell up and turn real purple.

I would get x rays. I broke a rib in my back at 17 while surfing. Me and the surfboard between a wave and the jetty.

Endo, mountain bike, about 5 years ago. Two broken ribs. Best test--lay down flat on your back--get up without rolling on your side. Did tensing your abds hurt? Could be a broken rib.

Concerning thing (among others) is that pain on deep inspiration could be a partially collapsed lung. Much less likely--should have slight shortness of breath, and typically pain in your shoulder/upper back.

Obviously, two things apply. One, most likely thing is a deep contusion (bruise) and/or other non-serious muscle injury. Other point--if it is getting worse, consider a trip to the ER.

I feel fine when I lay down and get up - no pain (other than just general all-over pain from taking a beating from the ground). When I breathe slowly it feels sort of 'tight'. If I try to do it real fast, it's just a bit of a sharp twinge of pain at the moment of max inhalation. I dont have pain in shoulder/upper back other than exterior skin abraded pain :)

I'll see how I do tomorrow and if its any worse (or if it gets worse through the night) I will head to the ER.

Its funny - when I hit the rock and I was flying forward, I very distinctly remember the same feeling I had when I got in my motorcycle accident in 2000. That "this is going to hurt - dammit just make it be over with" feeling. I wish I had it in slo-mo, I bet I bounced like a jellyfish over those rocks :)

Roadrash on the butt really sucks - hard to be in a position not to be sitting on your tuchus!

Same with me--I had WAY to long to contemplate the impending pain. The worse part was the 8 mile ride/walk back to the trailhead.

Try lifting something > 10 lbs. If it hurts a lot it's probably broken. My didn't hurt to breathe when I broke it, but it hurt like hell lifting anything heavier than my underwear.

    Mike,

I've broken ribs before, and it feels a lot like you've described. It's good to get an x-ray because they can cause further damage to organs.

I broke a few ribs - there was a little breathing difficulty and pain, but there's not much you can do. To be fair, I also broke my neck and bit through my tongue at the same time, so my ribs probably weren't a big deal at the time.

I, for one, want to see pictures of the severed tongue.

Not a whole lot one can do for broken ribs, but, to make sure major thoroughfares like lungs aren't blocked, causing bodily traffic to grind to a halt, by all means, have this checked out.

I fell off a jet ski going way too fast and hit the water like a brick.

It felt like I broke a rib... couldn't take a deep breath, shallow breathing was only way to go for first 48 hours.
I couldn't move, when I laid down. Getting in and out of bed was impossable.

Pain was liveable when standing-up, but no sudden movements or deep breaths....otherwise I got sharp pain.
Didn't want to go to the doctor, wanted to give it a few days to see what happens. (I have big bones, been through this once before with leg)

2 weeks later... I was fine.

Feel a lot better today but it HURT taking a shower with the hot water licking at my wounds. I called the doc and he says that I can come in, but if I can pick stuff up and such then its probably not broken. He said "if you break a rib, you'll know it". I can lift things, and I can breathe easier now. So I will sit on it for a couple days and I think I'm good :)

It wasn't severed, it was "bitten through"... actually, nearly 3 years later I'm kinda sad I didn't get pics of just how f*cked up I was, none of you would believe it!

I've probly posted the story somewhere else over a year ago, but who cares this is the interwebs... basically, in an accident I bit into my tongue. Six months after I'd healed from my broken neck and ribs and kneecaps and stuff, I started to notice a lump at the bottom of my tongue...

Not sure what this lump was, I just let it go and persisted with the malady that is life. After a few weeks, when I "played" with my tongue on my teeth it became apparent that there was a "rather hard" item in there... whenever I moved my tongue it was like scratching on a blackboard.

This continued for nearly a month - and I had just finally taken on another girlfriend after a 6 month drought so didn't want to really freak this chick out.

So anyhoo, I'm sitting there oneday just looking out at the view and feeling my broken kneecap (seriously disturbing!!!) and unconsciously twitching my tongue when all of a sudden there's this chunk of... *something* that lands randomly from under my tongue into my mouth!!!

I spit it into my hand... It's white - and hard.... I look closer, and notice that it's actually a piece of tooth that I'm missing from one of my teeth on my upper jaw...

In other words, this piece of tooth was broken off in an accident from a tooth on my upper jaw. Several months later it actually works its way out of the bottom of my tongue!

I'll try and take a pic of what it's like now... it hasn't been a problem for a long time but I'll check...

I remember when I fractured my back in 3rd or 4th grade, it was extremely painful. Hard to walk and breathe. Didn't realize I had until I was walking to gym class one day and nearly collapsed in pain. Got help to the nurse, went and had x-rays done and was told of my injury.

That reminds me of my mom telling me I almost bit my tounge off as a toddler. She said I always ran around with my tounge out.

I have no recollection of it.

    BTW, SRTMike:
Glad to hear that it only scratches/bruises. That could have been so much worse!
