Yeah right, and the Mangusta was supposed to be an Iso too. Same bs and innuendo by the same people as in other bulletin boards before.

 

In Italy, in the "60, everybody was taking the coffee together, when you see the central chassis of a Iso/Bizzarrini and when you see the Mangusta, it s true that they are a lots of similitudes in the idea. The P70 and the P538 share the same name P and are quite similar in the idea construction... now nobody known exactly what happen, I was not there and the people who was there say a different stories. Anyway, the evidences show a lot of ressemblance in theses 2 projects.

Well one thing is consistant with this statment, DeTomaso didn'y have many original ideas, many of the cars he is famous for were projects that were hand me downs. I would question that Giotto Bizzarrini was involved on the P 70, just from the stand point that the components used were not iso componenents, hubs, brakes, rims, etc. If you owned a exotic car company and you had a race car built wouldn't you want some type of tie-in to the brand? On top of that I have never heard Piero Rivolta discuss this. Nice looking car though.

Thats interesting, as i'm just about to write to Count Volpi. Maybe i'll ask him for further information on the car.

Yes, but when I ask Giotto where is the car, he told me that car was send to Switzerland and may have now a Alfa engine

I see very few similarities, really, except that they are both Italian-built barchettas with a US V8 amidships. The de Tomaso has a central spine chassis made of sheet steel a la Lotus, and the P538 has a spaceframe of steel tubing. A fundamentally different approach, to my way of thinking.
The Strada/America/Iso chassis is even more different, being based on a sheet steel floorpan "punt" with additional tube frames front and rear.
Regarding the Mangusta, Iso Fidia connection, I refer you to Wally Wyss' recent de Tomaso book which goes into the matter in some detail. Unfortunately, I don't have it in front of me, as it is at my workplace.

Post 484: I find it very, very hard to believe the engine in the prototype shown in the photo is from a Ferrari 348. Do you have any more information about this car? When was it built?

That intake certainly isn't from a 348.

 

I agree on the intake. But I would imagine it would have been heavily modified since it's a prototype.

 

Nice looking car but after looking at the chassis tubes in this post, they arent parallel, take a look, this guy needs a jig and a level.

 

Look the guy is 80 years old and has built more cars (himself) than most guys dream of. These are just pictures I am sure the final product will work fine. Bizzarrini welding was never great but the end product worked and looks good . Keep in mind this is the same guy that took all of Enzo's tired worn out designs and engineered them into some of the best cars in the world the 250 GTO's. What is the most sought after Ferrari of them all "the 250 GTO" Bizzarrini's work. He leaves Ferrari needed a part time job, so he designs the Lamborghini V12 in 6 months. Joins Iso and build one of Italy's best platforms the Iso Rivolta. The car didn't rock the world , but the platform was 10 years ahead of anything else and it was race ready. He build s a 100 Bizzarrini's and then contracts with American Motors to build the AMX. The gas crunch hits and the AMX is scuttled, but the AMX out performed all the Panteras and Ferrari's of the era. He is a hands on Genius and he is still bending steel, all of the other characters of that era are drinking ginger ale and signing autographs. This guy is the real deal.

You´ll find that Mr. Wyss is the only source in print claiming this connection. In Winston Goodfellows "Italian sports cars" page 92: Piero Rivolta:"We never considered anything like the Mangusta". Bizzarrini: "Anyone who associates my name with that car is making up history". Mangusta chassis is a development from aborted Shelby/DeTomaso CanAm project that was going to be called the King Cobra. It became obsolete before it even hit the track, as the engine sizes in CanAm increased.

As far as DeTomaso P70 and Bizzarrini P538 having someking of link for the letter "P" before a number(not claimed by you isobizz)... I wonder if Rover P4 was designed by Bizzarini too? Or McLaren P4/4? Bizzarrini won the 1988 F1 WDC and WCC! As I said earlier: Same bs and innuendo by the same people as in other bulletin boards before.

 

It s so funny to see some explanation from people who never spoke with De Tomaso and Bizzarrini, me I known a little bit about both marques as I ve written the official De Tomaso racing car book and the official Bizzarrini book. In the "60, more things happen that you can even imagine, and they was all connected together, because, it was like this. Can somebody tell me who was the "Stephano" related to Bizzarrini in the "60 and "70 ?
