Now if the court of appeal doesn't do anything stupid MCL won't have a chance. Ridiculous, fuel temperature! I find it rather staggering that Ron has the guts to even think of trying to 'win' the championship that way, it shows that there isn't one single bit of sportsmanship left in him. If he'll win, I predict FIA will be torn to pieces by every single team and every major journalist in the world (save the English yellow press), and maybe we'll see some teams leave F1 and reanmiate that old idea of an own, team controlled series.

Hello Steve! They were pretty pissed off this morning, even more when I told them the news that BMW/Williams won't be punished. I'm glad I'm still alive How was the general reaction in the UK?

 

I will try to be as impartial as I can since;
Kimi was my favored pick at the start of the year, LH and Nico round out my top 3, Williams is "my" team with Ferrari and Mclaren 2nd and 3rd.
I do not like the "All or nothing" sanctions being sent out by the FIA. The punishment must fit the crime. What was the advantage gained ? Without it would the results have changed ? Was it intentional ?
Unfortunately the FIA cannot be trusted to give out fair and impartial penalties as it is very politicised and everyone knows it.
What is needed SORELY is a fair and impartial panel to examine and hand out punishments.
My feeling is that the infringing teams will be fined ( feeds the FIAs coffers ) and all will be forgiven.
Perhaps the best solution.
LH had his chance in Japan went for it and came up short. ANYONE could have made this mistake.
PS; someone said a week ago that it would be easy to remotely mess with the telemetry on a modern F1 car causing systems to fail. Sounds like what happened to LH.

 

Pretty down beat to say the least we have not had a good run in sport these last two weeks.

There are alot of Ferrari fans in the UK . Most Mc fans would not want to see the WDC given to LH of the back of BMW penaltys of that Iam sure..

Er, no. There is no actuator built in the gearbox which could be triggered to block shifting by some evil mind pushing buttons behind the pit lane. The ways of influencing the cars over telemetry are very limited, don't know, like setting the brake balance (no need for that as MCL had the automatic Ferrari system anyway ), or maybe selecting different programs for the engine control unit. In no way could one cause mechanical problems like the one that happened to Hamilton.

 

Hmmm, Sounds like Ferrari's claims to the WCC in the courts. Or do these rules only apply when Ferrari has something to gain ?
BTW; Ferrari was the Judas recently when the decision for the teams to control their own destiny without the FIA came up.

 

There's a difference. Imagine Ferrari cheated like hell this season and won only due to some dirty tricks. Then I'd say: Go for the court, Ron! But getting beaten in such a devastating way and then trying to get the title at all cost by disqualifying drivers who had exactly nothing to do with the actual fight for the championship is far from being a sportsman

 

Well, I suppose Hamilton's (and the UK's ) day will come. Guess it's better to see him win on the track without all that mess that happened around, would have been kind of a hollow victory this year...

 

The Court of Appeals has not yet decided whether to take the case.

Fernando Alonso believes it would be bad for Formula One if Lewis Hamilton was handed the world championship title via a court of appeal ruling.

The outcome of the 2007 championship remains in doubt after McLaren informed the FIA that they would appeal against the race stewards' decision not to penalise Williams' Nico Rosberg and the BMWs in Brazil.

The three drivers finished ahead of Hamilton in fourth, fifth and sixth, but were the subject of a post-race investigation over the temperatures of fuel samples taken from their cars. The officials decided it could not be proved that the fuel had been below the temperature permitted under the regulations and that no action should therefore be taken.

But if McLaren's appeal is successful and the three drivers are penalised, Hamilton could gain enough points to take the world title away from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Alonso reckons such a situation could have dire consequences for F1's reputation.

"It would be a joke, and we've had too many already," he told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser. "If something like that happened, it would end up burying the sport."

The former champion could only finish a distant third in the Brazilian Grand Prix, and ended the season third in the standings.

He reiterated his belief that McLaren could have been more supportive of his title bid.

"It doesn't seem like the season has been managed very well," Alonso said.

"The result speaks for itself. McLaren lost the championship probably because of some of the decisions they took, especially in the second half of the season. It's no secret that they haven't helped me a lot.

"What my team boss stated in China, saying that they weren't racing against Raikkonen but against me, was a declaration of intent. So McLaren did their part in losing the title, but also Ferrari did a better job than the rest.

"In the last races both my hands and feet have been tied. I didn't have any power. I had to do it all the way they said and that made it harder to close the gap."

But despite his continued criticisms of the team, Alonso denied that he had resolved to leave McLaren, and played down suggestions that he was set for a return to former team Renault.

"I know there are rumours, but I haven't talked to any other team and that's the reality," he insisted.

"If I don't stay at McLaren, I can't say Renault is my first option."

 

So Ron Dennis will appeal. A bit of the pot calling the kettle black, no? But what a great opportunity to stick it to Ferrari and the Spaniard at once.
The fuel temp measurement itself has already been questioned and was likely coincedental if too cool. As another member mentioned in another thread a precedent has been established regarding the point penalty applying to the team only.
Should FIA strip Kimi of the title I'm through watching.
The regs are turning it into a spec series anyway.

If this is all to be found true. I have another theory. "Suppose" BMW and Williams purposely did this in the event of something like this happening. In other words, they did this so that they can "make sure" that Hamilton wins the WDC? Just a little theory. If that were the case, couldn't Ferrari fire charges against BMW and Williams? If they found evidence? Can you imagine the can or worms that would be opened if that were the case?
Just another side thought...............

 

I just think its fortunate for us to have someone on this chat room that not only knows the exact nature of the cars failure and the workings of the mechanism but also knows that there is a built in alternate solution (actuator?) readily available to the drivers aid if needed. Thanks

 

Oh, brother!

I like Lewis. Really, I do. But these past few weeks have shown that he still has a few kinks in his armor. He has done well from pole, but his performance coming from behind has not been stellar. As a young guy, he seems to push a little too hard and lets his enthusiasm get the better of him. Surely he will mellow with age.

He is a good driver and someday may win WDC. HOWEVER- Surpassing Schumi's records requires not just skill, but an "alignment of the planets" in such a way as to be fortunate enough to be able to do so. Schumi, for example, would probably have had a few less victories had he had to race Senna. Saying LH will surpass MS with such certainty is pretty lame, but using phrases like "by far..." and "surely..." borders on ignorant.

PS- And what of that Peter Windsor comment during the race that "...if you want to see overtaking...LH is the guy to watch"? I don't know his history before F1, but surely other people have had more and better on-track passes than LH this season.

 

Another thing to consider is that if they are found guilty maybe they should punish bmw and williams from their constructors points and not drivers, like stepneygate saga. Why punish the drivers unless evidence was found that they knew this information. More drama in F1 is just what we needed but i think this is going way too far now... IMO

Ronnie should not be appealing and instead be thankful that his drivers were allowed to race the rest of the year. LH and Alonso shouldn't have any points in contention to start with. I suppose Ferrari could also appeal that decision. And what a disgrace the sport would be-pitiful in my opinion-I'll stop watching for sure. They need to keep the politics out!!

 

Just what I was thinking too, afterall, FA and LH were allowed to keep their points and continue to race, RD/McLaren will only be shooting themself in the foot on this one if they do appeal. IMO, RD should just go and hug his 2007 replica trophy and call it a day.

 

Maybe Windsor meant it the other way around? Like in turn 3 on the first lap???

 

Don't know if I'm seeing sarcasm where there is none, but I've been involved in developing a semi automatic gearbox for formula car use (specifically the electronics of it), and I've done quite a bit of datarecording and telemetry stuff (among them developing electronics for a gear sensor and indicator), and in all the research I've done on that topic I've never heard of a system offering the method of influencing the actual shift mechanism/electronics from the outside (wouldn't make sense anyway). Now add Norbert Haug's statement that Hamilton's gearbox was mechanically jammed for a moment and I don't see why there should be an outsider involved

 

Looks to me like Dennis the Menace is trying to steal the championship for his boy.

Does Ron have any credibility left in F1?

Will they agree to hear his appeal?

Stay tuned. What was a Miracle Finish (pun intended) for Kimi has turned into a nightmare for F1.

If Dennis the Menace and his McCheater Team were banned from F1, the number of controversies in F1 would be practically nil. More racing, less shenanigans IMVHO.

Pitpass claims it was Hamilton's own fault by accidentally pushing the start button. He had to reset the whole thing that's why it took such a long time before he got going again.
