Um, so there can really only one obvious first choice. Sounds like by making Massa's contract official, Ferrari is saying something. I can't imagine they would make Massa a test driver after being such a team player.

So, is FA trying to insult Renault BEFORE he even gets there, or is this all part of the game to sweeten the pot?

    http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/071022174220.shtml

Fernando Alonso on Monday was quoted as saying that Renault is not his first choice of alternate employers for 2008.

McLaren is expected to address the issue of the openly uncomfortable Spaniard's contract within the next two weeks.

Alonso is quoted by a Spanish newspaper as playing down the rumours linking him with Renault, where he achieved his consecutive titles in 2005 and 2006.

"I have not yet spoken with any team," Alonso said, according to El Mundo Deportivo.

"I do not know if McLaren would release me, and if they did, Renault would not be my first choice," he added.

An ideal choice for FA would be one that has a competitive car and would be a big embarrasment to his current employer. That would leave one choice...BMW. They have shown very well this year and how much closer to the front would they be if they had one of the quickest drivers in the car? It would sure be a slap at Mercedes after the board supposedly voted to let him go to beat them in another German car.

With Alonso being known as a hot headed, this issue will be solved ;)

I was wondering too about Alonso in a way insulting Renault before he gets there. Question with BMW: Who would leave the team?

    Kubica.

Because Heidfeld and Alonso could try for a 1-2 finish at every race.

It's sad though... since Kubica survived a death-defying accident this season, and was right back in the race after missing 1 race.

I think you guys are off.
Alonso's first choice is the second Ferrari seat .Whether this will happen or not I don't know . Up until the race yesterday the Spanish media were saying that he's still negotiating with Ferrari. I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks.

I think that maybe Alonso stay in Mclaren another year if Dennis keep cold his brain and accept that today Alonso must to be the nº1 in Mclaren and Lewis Hamilton must to learn from Alonso how to be a good pilot, because today is only a rookie without real conditions to be a world champion, if Alonso don't stay in Mclaren i think that his only way is Renault or Toyota. regards.

He should go to ProDrive. Try & build a team up from the ground level. He already has a couple world championships. Alonso should gear up for a real challange.

Never happen but it would be a excellent PR move. He needs some good PR.

BMW is the only real choice.

He should go to Toyota. They'll likely pay him massive Bekham kind of money on a 5-year deal. And then he can legitimately blame the car instead of having to resort to conspiracy theories to explain his lack of performance ;)

why on earth must he be no 1?
in identical cars he got beaten by a rookie this season - why should that guy (LH) then play 2nd fiddle to him

That's the thing. Alonso is no Beckam pop-tart.
He's not going to a team where he can't win.

Yes , but as today FA is still a 2 times WDC and LH is not. And even more LH lost it in the rookiest way.

That said, I rather see them in different teams and fighting for the WDC, with no team 'favourites'.

It's acceptable for Lewis to lose it in the "rookiest" way. He's a rookie after all. What's not acceptable is for a 2 times WDC to finish the season BEHIND a rookie. Unless of course one buys into the conspiracy theories...

True, but we won't know, will we. What I know is that I rather see both of them compiting in different teams leaving aside conspirancies and media crap. It is clear tha LH has raw speed, but on the other hand FA has experience and can develop a car.

I have no doubt that LH will have experience and will learn how to get his car to wining level in the future.

Do not forget that rookie started in the best car with probably the teammate that could better setup a car in current F1. So LH found himself with half the job done, and precisely the part that requires experience.

    - Julio.

PS: I am happy KR won the championship. IMHO neither LH nor FA deserved it.

Your correct about Prodrive. I guess $75mil budget is not enough. Concord agreement didn't help either.

    Agree.

If McLaren had rightly made Alonso number 1 right from the beginning of the season they would have won the WDC. Simple as that. Instead they got excited by LH's apparent speed and confused the whole issue.

In the end LH is not ready and never was to be a WDC. The second half of the season proved that the first half had a lot of luck AND sitting in the best car while your team mate gets used to the Bridgestone tyres makes you look better than you are. Any top F1 driver is only 2% better than his team mate and that takes team support too, even MS. We all watched Rubens ocassionally push MS, and now he is having trouble keeping in front of the medical car after the starts. Add a bit of luck and Rubens could have lead the first half of any season in the dominant Ferrari ... just like LH.

And the fact that McLaren openly favoured LH is not a conspiracy theory but fact. Just imagine the team with another 10 big dollar British sponsors!!!!!!!!, and Bernie rolling out the red carpet everywhere ;)

Anyway LH might have another chance, but I would be concerned if I was him because with McLaren short of funds they might struggle to build such a dominant car and then he will look like a Webber ... oops, ie. faster than his team mate but looking for podiums not wins.

Pete, McLaren really blew it this year, I can understand if Hamilton was an experienced F1 Racer. The fact remains he was a Rookie and his time would have come, Ron Dennis made a big error. He should have been happy to have Alonso as the Number one driver for the team and made the most of what he had going. If I was MB I would be questioning my involvement with McLaren at the moment. They have not won a championship since 1999, and they have blow it now and back in 2005.

Toyota is beyond due to become competitive, and FA certainly would help. He would also make LOTS of money there...
