I would like a little help in clarifying my own opinion of Alonso, my formerly favorite driver. Ok, if Alonso pulled off the track then Lewis Hamilton would have won the WDC. From what I can calculate, if Fernado Alonso had rejoined in seventh, he would still have finished ahead of Felipe Massa in 3rd place in the WDC. I can assume that somebody asked him nicely over the scrambled radios if he could perhaps find a way to do this. Looking at the outcome of the race, he didn't move over for Lewis, just like Lewis didn't move over for him oh-so-many-months-ago in that infamous qualifying session. Maybe I'll remember this, next time I feel like being a jerk to somebody. "What goes around, comes around." "Payback's a *****" Just thinkin out loud..... Jay
If Alonso pulled over Hamilton would have tied on points but Raikkonen would win the title with more wins.
Lewis needed 2 points, he would only receive 1 point if Alonso pulled off. With 1 point he would tie Kimi but Kimi would win any tiebreaker that could have come up. In that case it would be most wins, Kimi with 6, Lewis with 4.
It wouldnt have mattered as Lewis had to finish 2 position further ahead. 1 spot would only have been a tie with Kimi whom had more wins by 2.
Yeah, I was kind of thinking those crazy thoughts near the end of the race as well. Like Ron Dennis offering a million dollars to one of the other team bosses to get either Nico, Robert or Nick to spin out or something...
Actually Ron Dennis did offer, but nobody in pit lane would take a check....... Thanks for the clarifications. Jay
Well, it's not just that, but keep in mind that Kimi really has had some bad luck right at the end of races and for Fernando that possibility meant that he would never pull over. Even the guys on Speed were joking about the black helicopter that seems to follow Kimi around like the rain cloud over Wile E. Coyote. Fortunately Kimi's rocket skates worked perfectly.
+1000 McLaren took the defeat right out of the jaws of victory for the season during the last two races. Great, better to have Kimi as WDC.
whatever it is, Fred seems happy post race. he seems happy for Kimster, calling him ' a worthy champion ' . i think, he's just glad Kimi, and not Hammi got the title.
Alonso would not have done anything to help Hamilton or McLaren. He seems happy with Kimi winning, and is happy to bash McLaren now.
I was thinking if Hamilton would have gotten 1 spot closer they may have pulled Alonso into the pits. Didn't Ferrari do that with Massa a few races ago? Edit: Meant to say "tried" to get him to pit.
I think that possibility more or less ended in .hu and it was LH/his dad who initiated it. I can only admire Alonso for doing as well as he did inside that can of worms. In the end LH paid the price for his own callousness ... too bad for him - one only begets one chance.
HAHA it would take a LOT more than 1 million, this is F1! Try more like $10-20 million before such a deal would be possible, although $1 million would probably be enough for a Craftsman Truck racer to pull off......
I agree with this. Alonso was smiling like crazy at the press conference. I was surprised he was so pleasant.
