I recommend that you get the cover filter for the end of the lens, makes your picture's come out more crisp and blocks the sun light getting in the way of your shots.

do any of you have a canon rebel xti?

im trying to figure out my main mode should be.

Auto is okay but it pisses me off because the flash keeps going off even if its not that dark.

Full Manual mode is my preferred choice. Otherwise, perhaps put it into 'sports photography' mode... but that uses a higher ISO default.

I have been using a Canon EOS 20D for going on 3 years, no complaints so far :) 99% of my shots are full manual, shot in 100 or 200 ISO, and varying apertures depending on what kind of DOF I want to play with. Just play around.. you have an SLR, now get to know it :) If using some automatic mode, then why on earth do you have a SLR???

I shoot with “manual” or in “AV” mode for you I would recommend shooting in “AV” mode until you figure everything out. Oh and yes in “manual” you will need to make adjustments per shot if lighting and other variables change between shots. Oh and there is a flash off “auto” mode on the XTi, it’s the last one on the mode dial wheel. “it’s a the one with the lightning bolt with a slash threw it”

Alot of people told me to try out the AV and TV..
    is sport mode any good?

I guess it's ok if you want to stick to the subject modes (not sure whether it's good or not). I think it lets you select the fastest shutter speed, which is the same as selecting the largest aperture in Av mode. So the choice is yours. Personally I think it's best to keep away from subject (scene) modes if you want to learn your photography.

I use a Canon S2 IS, with lens hood, and a teleconverter, I have been very happy with the Canon shooting cars beacause of its fast, good colors and sharpness, but my favorite is the huge zoom (12x, or over 400mm in DSLR format) and picture quality at all zoom ranges. Next camera will be a nikon DSLR maybe a D70S, maybe a D200.

I think Nikon's cheap SLRs are a little better built than Canons, but it's a wash at the higher end of SLRs and the P&S lines.

I shoot manual all the time.

If you like the 400D (XTi), you'll like the 40D. Same sensor but better microlenses for reduced noise and overall better sharpness; 9 cross-point autofocus; 14-bit Digic III; very good build quality.

Honestly I now have no idea how many cameras I have, but mostly I use four different ones for the majority of my work. Given a preference, I take my Shen-Hao HZX45A-II and a couple lenses: Schneider Symmar-S 135mm f5.6 and Nikkor-W 180mm f5.6. This all becomes digital files (up to 2 GB) through an industrial (heavy scanner) that takes up half a desktop. Anyway, here is just one image scanned from Kodak E100VS Readyload:

I find that the program modes are fairly bad at properly exposing an image. It's not slow once you get accustomed to it, especially if using a camera where you can change them both at the same time (different dials).

I'd be hard pressed to take something like this (beautiful) picture (from Gordon's site, posted above) in anything other than manual mode:

I have a Nikon D50 with the 18-55mm kit lens and the 70-300mm and have been shooting for about 15 months. This is a great camera that has given me awesome pictures time after time. I shot the USGP with this in June and had great results. I highly recommend a Nikon DSLR to anyone looking to get great pictures from a solid camera. I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with http://www.kenrockwell.com but I find myself on his site for hours reading and learning from his huge collection of articles. I really enjoy to see the work of others on this site and thought it was time for me to contribute some of my own. I hope you enjoy it.
(P.S. Anyone who is feeling generous this holiday season can feel free to send me over a D300, just PM me for my address.) Happy Shooting.

Ken Rockwell.com is the best site for when choosing a camera or just looking at awesome cameras that some of us cant afford (D300!!). I love his site because of his style of explaining and critiquing other cameras, I cant stand when other sites reviews and only points out the facts and positive points like they copied from a long list of meaningless specifications that aren't really important. Ken puts his personal opinion in there and when your reading you realize that a real person with real opinions teaches you and you can learn more than with the other camera review web sites offer. Basically he puts the fun back into camera reviews! Nice shots BTW.

Thanks for the compliment blackwood. That shot was a four (4) minute exposure at f22 on Kodak E100VS Readyload (4x5). It is a little odd doing those types of shots, because when you stand there none of the lights look like that, and the bay is constantly moving. I have done so many of these night shots that I rarely even need to meter the scene anymore. There is about a 20 minute window of opportunity when the sky looks that way. Anyway, glad you liked that one.

    Ciao!

I just received my Nikon D300. It has an incredible 3 inch screen on the back. The photos are significantly warmer than my D200, but not quite as warm as my Canon 5D. I really haven't experimented with it enough yet, but it is surely the best thing out there. The speed is incredible. Looks like the D200 will be moving out.

    I'll post pics soon.

    Cheers~
