i am only an amateur ferrari mech with the 4 i have had, but i would suspect you may be burning your exhaust valves with that much flame. it depends on the loading and mixture of the engine. i would ask a tech about it, before you need a valve job. best, michael
I'll be interested as well. Specificallly, when I am running high RPM's in a given gear and lift off the throttle, I spit a flame and occasionally backfire. Not always, but I've been told about it.... Also, would a modern ignition system affect this, as in a more complete burn? Or am I way off here? JIM
It is excess gas just hitting the exhaust after not being burned off right? So i mean i would assume that means your running rich. I am more asking then telling though so take it for what its worth.
may be a timing problem. do you have cats? they may be allowing unburned fuel to accumulate and when you back off the throttle.. pop. even though it looks totally cool i don't think it's a good thing.
No cats on a '74....just headers into the exhaust. In Hans' case its right into that GORGEOUS X-OST!!!! (I'll be ordering one soon... ) In my case I *think* I'm just putting fuel right into the manifold going from high revs to off throttle....Interested in thoughts from the carb guru's... JIM
Valve timing is off??? Hmmm, the whole thing DID start after my belts were changed (by a reputable shop). How do I check my valve timing???? Thanks, Hans
Hans, Have you always had popping and crackling when you lift off throttle, even before the belt change? My car has always done this and I got it not too long after a full major service and the carbs were adjusted at the time of the PPI... JIM
The "Blue Flaming Beast".....I love it! Not sure why its happening though? I go with the unburned fuel theory. It does Look very cool though! I wonder if I can get mine to shoot red flames??? Cheers!
My carb 308 did not backfire upon deceleration until I put on a free flowing exhaust. My opinion is that the free flowing exhaust is doing a great job of scavenging the unburnt fuel mixture from the cylinders and it is igniting in the hot exhaust. If you notice, you will hardly backfire upon deceleration until the car warms up.
I have a true dual exhaust made up of 2 magnaflow mufflers - completely separate dual exhaust into each bank - the car does pull strong with this setup.
Set it at TDC and check all markers make sure they all lined up, both intake and exhaust cam pulley, and at thew flywheel. Preferably if you can dial in your cam the better.
