ok, this might be a tuffy... I bought a set of 456 wheels from a guy to replace my ''boat anchor'' 348 wheels... after I sent the money and he's about to ship them out, he emails me and asks if I want to buy a set of lug bolts. I told him ''i'll just use the ones already on my car''. THEN he informs me that my original rear lug bolts will be TOO LONG for the 456 wheels!! which he previously explained would ''bolt right on!''. Anyway, the question is... how much too long are my bolts?? i'll just make up the difference with some spacers (which I want anyway) so what width H.E. type 1 spacers should I get to make my lug bolts the RIGHT length??
Too be on the safe side--I would test fit one once you get it and that will tell you the exact length the bolt is too long..Buy spacer accordingly
yea... that was the plan, but then I thought if somone knew.. then I could get the spacers ordered and on the way while i'm still wating for the wheels to get here.
Take off the old wheels and measure how much the bolt protrudes from the back side, then put the same bolt in the new wheel and measurs how much it protrudes. The difference is the size of spacer you need to use with the same bolt. Or the difference is the size of bolt you can order from Ricambi to use without spacer. If it's only a few mm you may get away without using anything.
Ask Daniel with Ricambi. He would probably know or be able to find out for you, and he sells the H.E. spacers. BT
The guy I bought the wheels from had them on his 348 spider, he said that when he bought them he found out the hard way that the original 348 rear bolts were too long... so I guess they bottom'd out or maybe went too far thru the hub and hit something... who knows, I definately want to go with the spacers, I want a wider track in the back. I also asked the guys in the 456 room if anyone could just tell me the length of thier rear bolts... My bolts, minus whatever that is, equals spacer!
* 348 uses the same size bolts front and rear, as long as we're not talking about 94 spiders. * A standard 348 bolt will fit the front wheels of a 456. * 456 rear wheel bolts have a longer head (33mm instead of 27mm) than normal 348 bolts. You need new rear bolts, in the standard 456/Rear size. Standard 456 rear bolts are 33mm head, 55mm length (from base of head to tip of thread). Standard 348 rear bolts are 27mm head, 55mm length (from base of head to tip of thread).
Crap. So you're saying that 33mm is the LENGTH of the head itself? then wouldnt the 348 bolts work, and just sit 5mm deeper into the wheel?? I guess it doesnt make sense that he said the 348 bolts were too LONG!
To be honest, I don't think the 456 wheels will even fit nicely, regardless of bolt. I suspect they would extend significantly beyond the wheel arches. (Seller's 348 rear bolts are from a 94 spider, right? Those are indeed way too long, as they measure 80mm under the head.)
Yes, as far as I know.... and I actually hope they do sit further out than the stock wheels... I hope not significantly tho... here is a pic. So Daniel, will the original bolts from my 1991 348 hold these rear wheels on, or not? Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is a 550 wheel on a 348 - The 456 wheels have about 8mm less offset and would push the wheel out even further Paul Image Unavailable, Please Login
oh man... well, if that becomes the case, I guess i'll just resell em. They look good in the pic! But I dont have a pic at the same angle as yours...
I remember reading about someone that put these on their 348 and it required some cutting to the inside wheel hubs for proper fitment. They do not just bolt on cleanly. Pretty wheel, though, if you can make it work, like a stylized 355 wheel. On second thought, just get some 355 wheels.
Those wheels look great on that Spider! Perhaps you can get the centre hub machined a few mm, so that it does not protude out of the wheel arch, like the 550 wheels in Paul's pic. It can be done, and may be the only way to get them on the car. If the already had them on his car, then one would assume that its already been machined? Wait till you get the wheel mate, bolt them on and go from there.
well, I got these for $900 WITH tires, I would rather have 355 wheels of course, but those cost 3 times that much at minimum, and then ive gotta buy $1000+ worth of rubber for them! These look very similar to 355 wheels, and when I saw them in that pic... SOLD! I can tell you this, the guy that owns that spider in the pic, did NOT modify his rotors, wheel wells or anything like that, he specifically said they bolted right on, except for his original rear lug bolts being too long... but I think Daniel cleared that up. But if they get here and stick way out past the body like Paul's... or WORSE, thier going on ebay! I'll take some pics regardless... we might as well ALL learn something from this... and i'm used to being a guinea pig!
ok ok ok... is there any offset difference between 348 and 355 wheels? Theres a guy in another forum wanting to put 355 wheels on his 456... somone told him that he would need 25mm spacers to get the 355 wheels to the same outer location as the original 456 wheels. Based on that, if the 456 wheels have a 25mm offset difference from the 348 wheels... the 456 wheels would come out to almost exactly the edge of the wheel arch... and if so, I could live with that! Man do I hope thats how it goes... I just cant believe that this guy who had these on his 348 spider had them sticking out an inch from the wheel arch... everytime he'd hit a bump the tires would hit! I have really good pics of the tire tread, and theres no evidence of any grooves or marks from hitting the body of the car! Image Unavailable, Please Login
