Burger Pit Restaurants. My mom took me to the one in Cupertino once a week after school for a hot dog, then off to Black Berry Farms golf course for 9 holes. I think the only one that may be left is on Blossom Hill Rd.

Futurama Bowling Alley on Steven Creek. This is the only pic I could find. At least Safeway kept the original sign that was used for the bolwing alley.

Primo's Pizza and Foster's Freeze in Danville. Not really landmarks, but by far some of the best food and hospitality.

Elliot's Bar in Danville. My girlfriend's family founded Elliot's, as well as pretty much all of Danville. So Elliot's is a big one to us.

I think there's still a place called the Brass Rail in Sunnyvale, but I don't think they will wash your car...

    edit -- yup! http://www.brass-rail.com/

Pete's Brass Rail and Carwash is still there in Danville. Still fantastic burgers too! There is no "Pete", no "Brass Rail", and no "Carwash" though. ;)

The plan was a for Interstate 480 / the Embarcadero Freeway to connect 280 and Bay Bridge with the Golden Gate. Outcry stopped the project just past Broadway. I thought there was a notable nickname and I can't recall what it was. If Herb Caen was around I'd ask him.

This is a great thread so I've got to add a few. - George

Marin/Larkspur Landing - the "Hutchinson" building at the quarry, so warped the name went up and down
    Tiburon - Blackie's pasture (sway-back horse)
SF - the old De Young Museum & Calif Academy of Science
SF- Union Square (was beautiful), I. Magnins, The City of Paris, ...
    SF- Trader Vic's
SF- Play Land, giant slot car track, indoor wooden slide & burlap sacks
SF- Ships and carriers at Hunters Point
SF- Willie Mays at the Stick
    SF- Earthquake McGoons jazz place
San Mateo- The Lanai , now a strip mall :(
BRIDGE TOLLS WERE FIFTY CENTS (key board no longer has a cent key)

BRIDGE TOLLS WERE FIFTY CENTS - Really?
Bay Bridge with the Golden Gate - Macarthur Maze isn't it? Or is that in Oakland? :p
Embarcadero Freeway to connect 280 - Portside 280 but doesn't go all the way to Pier1. It's ok, the view is better now in that area.

*I remember seeing Willie at the Stick when I was about tn years old.
*I kinda remember Playland. By the beach, right?

    CRUISE SHIPS AT SF:

I remember seeing my aunt off from one of the SF piers to Hawaii on the SS Lurleene (SP?). I was probably 5 or 6. That was a BIG DEAL! Non-passengers were allowed on the ship before it set sail. Before sailing, I remember the ship's horn blowing three times and people on the ship tossed confetti, etc. Quite the event!

Fox Theater, downtownn San Jose. When I was about 12, my brother-in-law and I went up the fire escapes of the building next door to it and jumped from the roof to the top of the theater (About 5-7 floors up, maybe more). The roof had asphalt gravel on it. We would pick up handfulls of the small rocks and drop them on the people in line for the movies! Try something like that today!!

I loved Bob's BB! Use to hit the one in Cupertino. Too bad 'Fat Bob' had to go, but the Flames is a nice replacement.

    Here's another!

SAMBO's! Great diner. Too bad the ACLU put their theme out of business! It was always a good, clean restaruant for a good breakfast!

MORE FOOD: The restaurant at Sears in Cupertino. They use to have the best burger, fries and a coke for about $2.95.

Great list! I understand that the SF Doggie Dinner head (at least one of them) was bought by an Emeryville resident. It laid outside his home for years (may still be there).

Here's one to add: the huge beer glass near 101 in SF. For the life of me I can't remember the brand. It's was neon and would fill and empty.....

I also remember my first McDonald's on El Camino at the Belmont/San Mateo border. It was one of the eaerly double arches variety. The sign said "over one million sold"

And the BIGGEST waste of land second to San Quinten Prison. Can you imagine the developers that would like to get their hands on all that land (Both) and what the counties could pull in for taxes? WOW!
