What's the clipboard for??? Is that's the doctors notes on the patients condition? You gotta be stoked to see that thing outta the car like that. Now all those things you wanted to clean and polish but just couldn't reach are all available to ya.
LOL! No man, that's no clipboard. It's the oil cooler in a box for protection. Oh you no it. The only problem is, I just don't know where to start.
Newman, mk e, My understanding from reading previous engine removal posts & procedures over the years is that the front header must be removed before you can rotate the engine as you describe. To pull the front header, you have to pull one of the gas tanks. To rotate the engine the way we did you just have to remove the bell housing/transfer case, rear motor mounts, spacers & studs. Once they're removed, it'll come out without touching. It's a lot easier to pull the bell housing, motor mounts, etc. than it is to pull the front header with the engine in place. When JWise & I pulled his QV engine, we did pull the rear mounts, spacers, & studs before starting lifting, & the engine came out pretty easily. Problem we got into this time is I forgot that the rear motor mounts, spacers & studs had to come off. Thus we started the pull with the mounts, spacers & studs in place & got to the point where we couldn't go either up or down. Of course having one of the strap hooks up against the intake plenum was another DUH-OH that occurred at that same awkware point. I don't believe anyone there would make either of those mistakes again. However, if you can pull the engine by rotating towards the rear w/o pulling the front header, then those previous posts were wrong & the whole equation changes.
When I removed the engine from my first car (77 308 GTB), I was not able to rotate it far enough either way to make any real difference. In the end I was able to slip it out in an almost level position by carefully working it around things while lifting slowly. As such, I am of the opinion that the engine should be able to removed or installed with the header, alternator and starter installed, but next time the clutch housing will be removed. My rear motor mounts did catch on things a bit, so I would probably remove them, but I dont think the studs would be an issue. I am contemplating pulling the motor from this second car so I can clean and detail the engine compartment, possibly swap heads, etc., I just need motivation.
You can simply leave the header sitting flat on the frame rail and lift the engine out. You dont have to remove the tank to leave the header sitting there. Its easy to access too. Starter stays in, bellhousing and mounts stay on, etc....ferrari somehow puts these engines in with the a/c compressor on, which seems impossible with a regular cherry picker.
(imported quote from SC thread) OK Chris, lets have it! I think you've been talking about a supercharge for as long as you've been on f-chat. Are you coming back to the light and staying natural aspiration or going to the extra dark side and turboing it.....or no, I can't even think iy...are you (God forbid) looking at another model ferrari?
Now now Mark, i can't let the cat out of the bag yet. Besides, i got to fix my gear box first. Yeah, i know. But after i pulled the motor out i started having crazy ideas. Not MarkE kind of crazy ideas. The 308 is staying. Just going to wake her up a bit.
Don't be like that....that poor cat will suffocate if you don't let it out! Don't be like that either, I haven't even mentioned the supercharged v12.....I did not just say that
Too common for Mark.... FOUR itsy-bitsy blowers - one for each of 3 cylinders to match the pulsing. The POWER of FOUR: Four Cams Four Valves Four Turbochargers Four Miles per Gallon
LOL. I was just kidding seriously, I was kidding .........fine, dont believe me then Now the way cool camshaft idea that just popped into my head on the other hand.......can't let the cat out of the bag just yet, but it's way, way cool
Nows the time for variable cam timing, might as well if you have to come up with a cam drive system anyway. Why not variable lenght runners too
I hadn't thought about this...let's discuss on the v12 thread so it doesn't distract from Chris telling us about his plans here
Well, if you really want to know, this is my plans: Now that i have the motor out i decided to rebuilt it with 10:1 comp. pistons and do a nice valve job and switch to................. Image Unavailable, Please Login
