I have been reluctant to ask this question given the amount of BS that has recently been floating around the site but anyway here goes. Apologies if it has been addressed before but I couldn’t really find anything relevant in the search function.

I know its not a Ferrari and this is FerrariChat but I need to admit that my ultimate car is the Carrera GT (I will now run for cover). It is my understanding that none of these were sold in Australia, however, I could be wrong on this.

My question is whether anyone has any knowledge as to whether it is possible to import one of these into the country. They are all LHD so obviously road registration is not a possibility (at least in the next decade or two) but if one wanted to import a car and just use it on a track (or possibly occasionally on the road utilizing 28 day VicRoads permits) is this possible?

I guess if it is one of those “anything is possible if money is no object” sort of situations then I am not really interested in taking it any further. However, given the current exchange rate position, if a good car can be purchased for say $400K and transport, customs, LCT, GST etc wouldn’t come to any more than say $200K-$300K tops then it seems to me that you could get one landed for similar money to a 599, 430 Scuderia etc (albeit not registerable).

Anyway, if anyone has some information that would assist, I would be most appreciative. I will also be asking my Porsche dealer next week when they kindly remove the contents of my wallet for my cars annual service.

    Thanks all.

Great idea, might have to investigate it.

I was reading somewhere on this site that an enzo may be able to be driven on aus roads with a club plate? i think it was club plate? something to do with the fact that you can drive the car to within 25kms of the place it lives for the purposes of testing out the new modifications or something to tha extent?

    was a small loophole...

Any further insights into this guys?

Any imported to Australia - No! There was one sold to an Australian but he kept it overseas. Not sure if he still owns it.

There was a red demo/press car brought out by Porsche - since long gone. And an American brought out a silver car for Classic Adelaide 3 years ago. The event organisers organised permits for the week much the same as they also do for the occasional F40 and 360C.

I'm sure you could bring a car here for the right $$$. No difference to F40/F50 in that they are a long way off being registerable for road use. I'd suggest making some enquiries with an import broker. There's going to be a lot of paperwork (and taxes).

I doubt your local dealer will be of any assistance at all.

Thanks for the info Waz. Any import brokers you could recommend - I imagine there are some that are best avoided!

I'll PM you some names and numbers in the next few days. They should be able to give you an idea of what you're in for.

Also look at the DOTARS site for the latest rules and regulations.

There were 2 officially brought out to the country and they are both officially owned by Porsche Cars Australia.

One lives at Mt Cotton and if usually piloted by Thomas Mezzera. The other have been know to surface at tracks such As Phillip Island for Special Events. (Alex Davison has clocked up a few KM's in that one)

The Only reason why they were not brought into the country to be driven on Public roads aside from being LHD was due to the fact that the Chassis is Carbon Fibre which Apparently was not legal for a road production vehicle at the time it was built.

Why tie all that money up in a road car you can't really drive on the road? Get a new GT2 - faster, cheaper than a CGT and you can drive it everywhere.

I think the CF issue, if true, is irrelevant since the LHD issue killed it anyway.

I completely agree (sort of) - the new GT2 is a great car but I bought the 911 Turbo as my first expensive car with my head (reliability, everyday usability etc) and as I slowly add to this the rest are going to be based mainly on passion. I know its not logical, but there is just something about the look, sound & overall package of the CGT that does it for me - nothing wrong with the GT2 (I also drove the 996 GT2 when I bought the turbo) but its just not for me.

BTW - congrats on the sale of your Lambo - that looked to be a seriously great car.

I'm missing it too. It was in for gearbox warranty repairs last time I spoke to the new owner which is a shame. It should be on the road during the Spring Carnival. It brightens up the day of any car nut that sees it.

Mark, have you decided what you're going to get as a replacement yet? You mentioned you really like the Carrera S - is that still on the cards or something else?

I think the GT2 might be a bit too much car for me - if I go Porsche, I'd want it to be a daily driver. But I love the idea of the GT2 all the same.

Sorry, I wouldn't drive an Aston for free. Not sure why but they just don't appeal. They don't strike me as a driver's car - more a poser's car. Probably completely unfair, mind you.

You've test driven pretty much everything else, maybe you need to take one for a lap to see if they're what you imagine or not?

I have always considered them beautifully understated - just stunning to look at. Certainly not as much of a focused drivers car but given our road laws etc in Aus, there are limited opportunities to fully utilise these cars anyway. I test drove the V8 Vantage and really enjoyed it but less so the DB9 for some reason.

Apparently only 3-4 cars a year i hear... 550k and the optional watch which has a chip in it so you dont need a key to open, 50k!

    No change of 600k!

So anyway, can anyone shed some light on my query in relation to the club plates and some loophole of being able to drive the car within 20k or so of its registered address to roadtest modifications?

3 cars for Melb next year - not sure how many after that. Have heard that Aston are looking for ways to increase the yearly output of the DBS to cash in on the orders they have. The watch is nice but I reckon that thing you insert in the start button is a toss.

I'm not sure what the deal is with club plates but as I understand it, LHD cars like the F40 etc can also be driven on 28 day permits for the purpose of mechanical testing etc with the intention of preparing it for registration one day (after 15yrs or 30 yrs or whatever the time limit is). Not sure about distance restrictions but I think you can only drive between 7am-7pm Mon-Fri. The permits are only about $70-$80 per 28 day period. I think I found some info on here somewhere too when I started looking at it.
