To remove the rear hub nuts do i need a 45mm tool ? Over here in the UK a company known as Hill engineering make a range of sizes of the type of socket that fits these nuts. Also I take it that these nuts cannot be reused (or is that a stupid question?)

I am sorry that I can't help you with the nominal size of the tool, but I would think that Hill Engineering could supply the right tool by application or with a measurement of the OD of the nut. I think that the trouble of getting the tool would be much less than the trouble of trying to do the job without the tool, especially getting it torqued properly upon assembly.

I have re-used ring nuts by carefully prying back the staked areas. If that area broke, I would put the nut or the part on a surface grinder and remove just a tiny bit of metal so that a different area of the collar would be used to stake the nut. However, the nuts are available and not very expensive, so it shouldn't be a worry.

Superformance have the gearbox and transfer gear locknut tools in stock (i know, i made them) I am sure this driveshaft nut is the same as the gearbox main shaft

Also you can reuse the nut [if you can get it off undamaged) but it usually tightens back in exactly the same place where it is peened over. Therfore renew it.

Adapting a socket will not work [tried it] the lugs snap off they need to be internal and case hardened machine tool steel

Can i ask why do you want to remove it?

Hi, Tony, I want to get the hubs apart purely for cosmetic reasons! The castings are to be stove enammeled. I suspect that the wheel bearings are probably in pretty good shape as the car has done only 60k but i guess they ought to be replaced whilst apart. I note that at Superformance that the bearings are quite expensive in comparison to the front ones, is this because they are a rare size or do you think i may be able to source elsewhere?
    Regards, Graham

    Hi Graham

You should be able too source them somewhere else, any specialist bearing shop could get them i suppose. Make sure they are a good quality though as you may be doing the job twice!!

I have a tool that MAY fit, we made tools to fit the gearbox and transfer gear locknut, if this nut is the same then you are welcome to borrow it.
