So where can you get some earbuds that don't sound like listening to an am radio through a tin can? I bought some $15 one's from Wal-Mart and they sounded worse than the stock earbuds...

I can't stand those earbuds. Everyone within a 10 foot radius can hear every detail of sound coming out of them and it is really annoying when you are in an elevator, bus, or train. Especially if there are 2 people listening to their ipod at once.

Buy some Shure's. Any Shure's will do the trick. The high end one are the greatest...

I have a problem spending more on ear buds than the actual iPod itself.

I bought some cheap JVC's, and they are 'ok' but lack much bass, but I am eyeing a set of JBL's that are around $70.
Shure are out of my range, realistically, and Bose have not been rated very good by anybody as far as 'fit' goes, FWIW.

Be sure you are looking for what you want - inner ear style that go IN the ear, or the outer ear style which are like the stock Apple iPod ones that come with it.

I buy the $.99 earbuds at WalMArt for my own use and they work great for me. I buy ten at a time because when I leave them lying around the house, they become chew toys for the dog! Chelsea on the other hand has to have the expensive iPod earbuds because she notices the difference and can't stand the cheap ones. I don't mind paying the $$ for Chelsea because she takes better care of her stuff than I do!

I'm going to try and not sound too stupid here......

I have never owned or used an iPod before and I am about to buy an iPod shuffle for when I practice for hours at the golf course. Is it the general consensus of this thread that the earbuds that come with the iPod are not very good? I really don't want to spend the price of an iPod for a set of decent earbuds.

The stock one's aren't that bad really, they just don't have very good bass and they sound kinda midrangey, if that makes sense.

I want the in-ear style with good deep bass response and nice highs. Having spent so many years working in recording studios my aural taste is a bit too "refined" sometimes.

So any good IN ear buds with great bass under $50?

BTW, this is what I use at home. Best headphones ever:

This thread reminded me I was down to one set that has a short. Bought the last two at WalMart tonight! Pretty decent for the price.

Is there a thread about any problems you ran into taking a pic and uploading it onto Fchat through your computer? :p j/k

Btw, I only have the iPod earbuds and am listening with them right now. I know what you mean about little to no bass, but I'm not an audiophile or anything. Usually I only use my earbuds on the train and I'm willing to bet the person next to me can hear it, lol.

I've always held the opinion that the headphones were 50% of the equation - the other 50% was the file-format used to 'rip' the tracks. If you're trying to get Audiophile sound from a 128K MP3 'rip', you're wasting your time and money. I've always used Apple's Loss-less Encoder, which produces a higher-quality (although much larger) audio file. I have not seen any significant audio review that analyzed, in-depth, the analog signal that an iPod produces, so who is to say what pair of headphones will best utilize the signal being fed to it? It all boils down to taste and what YOU can hear with the signal your iPod is producing.

I have a pair of $12 Sony earbuds that, shockingly, are still in-production. They're probably 12 years old, and were bought when I still had a Sony portable CD player. They're loud, comfortable (unlike the inner-ear models that look like ear-wax plungers), and are semi-disposable. I've worn them to the gym, gotten them wet, gotten paint/snow/dirt on them, and smacked the buds into desks and floors and they still sound great.

i can't wear any type of earbuds, they never seem to want to fit in my ears plus i find them extr, extremely uncomfortable. i use a pair of sony headphones, the type that wrap around your neck, that i picked up for something like 10 or 15 bucks at wal mart a couple years back, and they work perfectly even still to this day. just my .02.

I would think for $199+ that Apple could throw in decent headphones.

My Sony mp3 Walkman came with earbuds that can blow your eardrums from the bass!

    Apple zombies...

And give up $17 worth of profit for every unit they can sell at retail ($29.95 SRP, cost to retail: $18 and a dollar cost to manufacture)? Are you crazy? ( :) )

Shures are the way to go. Doing a bit of flying, its always a pleasure to put them in and not hear anything but music and a slight engine moan. Yesterday I had two flights with kids seated near me and one screamed most of the 2 hour flight. Only time I heard it was below 10k feet and when ordering my cocktail. Very nice set of earphones. Here.

Yeah, they're huge but damn they sound amazing. Too big to carry around in my shirt pocket though :)

    Thanks, I'll check them out.

Yes of course :) I don't really like mp3's but can only fit 90 .wav files on my ipod, so I'm using 256k mp3's. They sound alright I guess, just wish I had more bass in my headphones. I'm learning to live with the compromise of more files and less quality. It's a hard road to travel though...

I've got Westone UM1's....They supply parts to Shure and cost less compared to a pair of Shures of the same specs.

Redhead - you sure you are flying and not using David Clark's ??

I think the stock iPod ones provide great sound - but they are not IN-ear, they are ON-ear, so you can't be too active with them. As far as Bass goes, I'm sure you guys have clicked on the 'Bass' option, right ?

It's always good to have a spare pair nearby, they will break at the worst possible time.

I bought an $18 pair of JVC's, I'm not impressed, I may be trying a pair of Shures or possibly JBL's soon, but no hurry.

I would buy a Nano before I would buy a Shuffle simply for all the different settings you can choose. As far as I know, you load a Shuffle, turn it on, and have no choice as to what you listen to, it plays in whatever order it wants. And I'd buy a Refurb from Apple.com and save $50 over the retail price AND you get a 1 year warranty.
Here's the bad part - if you have to send it in under warranty to Apple - and they can't find anything wrong with it - looking at their fine print, they will charge you $100.00.
