I can't find ANY of my paperwork from the sale and the DMV is on my butt. Will the buyer please drop me a PM. Thnx Pete
SAY WHAT??? Didn't you file release of liability paper work with the DMV? If not I would look into that ASAP!
Hardy, har, har, smartass. There is a release of liability attached to the bottom of the pink slip. Well in California it is anyway. You are supposed to fill it out with the buyers & sellers information and hand/mail it in when you sell the vehicle. A LOOOOOOOOONG time ago I forgot to turn in the release of liability form, for a Vespa that I sold, and the state came after me for past due registration fees. It was something like 6 YEARS after the fact. Anyway I had to make a special appointment with the DMV to meet with an agent so I could resolve the situation. You REALLY must make sure you get that release turned in because they will go as far as trying to garnish you wages. YES that's right garnish your wages. That's how I found out about it. I got called into the human resources department one day and was asked why the state had issued a garnishment of my wages. Well you can imagine what a total blind side that was. Try tracking down the dude you sold it to, over half a decade after the fact, and having to prove you even sold the thing. Like I said a real pain in the ass. They can come after you for parking tickets that someone else gets while driving the car, amongst other things. So................when you sell any vehicle be sure to file that release of liability paper work THE SAME DAY.
Stupid California DMV!!! The last four cars I've sold or changed title have ALL been screwed up by the DMV. And I make a point to send in the release same day. I've even gone on-line to release a car when I've recieved notice, and they still manage to **** that up. Those bastards are high!!!
We have a lawsuit right now against someone who says they sold the car... someone in their car hit our client in a hit-and-run (they got the car, driver fled on foot).
Peter, when you have Sameer's info you can enter it online at the DMV here. Last time I mailed a release in I had all kinds of trouble. Haven't had any problems with the online form - knock on wood.
