I thought this problem was only for 348/355. I have noticed a VERY sticky black residue on all plastic interior trim parts after applying (in error) Mothers Back to Black (product is for exterior only). I have now it seems made the matter worse by applying Megiuars Gold Class vinyl rubber protectant. I have tried simple soap and water with a terry cloth but nothing seems to be lifting the sticky residue. Any suggestions?

God bless Ferrari - what other auto company could repeat the same error for 18 years, and just blame the customer? The upper vents, dash vents, door pulls, switches, and bezels on the 360 are absolutely no exception to the sticky/gummy problem. Beware: 430 and 599 have the same material on certain surfaces too.

The only suggestion is to replace the offending items. I really question whether the application of the products you mention caused the problem...might have, but just as likely to happen anyway. They seem very sensitive to sun too.

Lots of products will take off the gummy surface. Easy-Off oven cleaner is a favorite on many 348/355 cosmetic threads (some even put it on Q-tips and remove the sticky surfaces while in the car!). Even better results when the clean surface is repainted.

Just be sure to remove the vents first, do not apply anywhere near the car/leather!

    Alright gentlemen,

No more EASY OFF on the sticky parts, please.
I will gladly give a trade secret to all. Use denatured alcohol, and red thin shop rags. The denatured alcohol removes the product gently, and easily, and leaves no chemical residue. Please wear latex gloves, and remember to change frequently as you will get this on your gloves, and it can spead on the leather elsewhere.
I just spent approx 8 hours patiently removing the interior door handles, all switches including radio knobs, E-brake handle, convertible top handle, HVAC vents, and HVAC cover and switches, and last but not least, the steering colum cover of a 355 spider.
Do not over saturate the rag, simply put a small amount on, and it will work the residue off easily. Easy off is an extremely harsh chemical, and yes it will remove the product, however in the near future some of you may see circut corrosion, or brittle plastic parts.
If any sticky reside gets onthe leather, use Murphys Oils soap, 1 ounce in a 20 ounce bottle sprayer, will clean the leather better than Lexol.

P.S. removing the steering colum cover is a slow delicate process. That plastic part on the 355 is $350. I know inexpensive compared to most parts, but you'll want to take a hammer to the top section while trying to remove it so patience is key here.

You may always email me for additional questions or advice on detail issue. The advice is always free, the labor is what will cost you!

    Sean

It came off quite easily for me...perhaps four screws. I think I loosened and lifted the instrument binacle as well, just to make it easier (it removes by two phillips screws from below). The plastic steering column is only $147 from Ricambi America...I bought mine from there, and just carefully removed the vin plate from my old column cover.

Acetone also works very well. Same proceedure as described by Sean.

You can make your own by mixing gasoline with rubbing alcohol. Best to just use acetone for the same effect, though.

Wow... I'll chime in here too. I would strongly discourage ANYONE from using gasoline for any purpose other than pumping it into their engine. It is massively flammable and wildly dangerous.

Acetone can soften many plastic parts, use caution here.
Denatured alcohol is flammable, but the easiset and safest product to use in regards to both end user and item slotted for residual removal.

We use acetone sometimes, and it does work, but I can confirm that it eats through these plastic parts. I asked one of my guys to keep on wiping a 348 center console (with acetone) until the black came off - well now there is a big hole right through the part. My fault for not specifying that we just want the sticky stuff off.

Be careful with the lacquer thinner, as it will leave a residue. Same thing applies for prepping paint for touch ups, etc. The alcohol will not leave any residue.

We have used every product mentioned here. Most with good results but these chemicals can cause problems to your interior and your skin. We now use a product called Charlie's soap. It isn't harsh or smelly and you can use it for a variety of jobs. It takes the sticky layer right off. A little on a rag and rub it off. I use their laundry soap at home. It's great. You can order it on the internet. http://www.charliesoap.com/ And no, I am not affiliated with them. I just like their product.
