Ron, you're really mixing up two things here: In one case McLaren was the thief in the other the victim. I don't like McLaren any more than you do, but let's be fair.

The FIA should investigate all these cases. Including the Toyota case.

 

...TOYOTA walked away clean cause they werent going nowhere but backwards - shouldnt matter, as long as they are cheatting, they shuld be punished - and Renault will answer...and Walk ´cause FIA dont want more dirty water flooding tabloids...again.

besides McLaren brought it up as a Smoke curtain...or an atempt to look "affected" by such behavior in the past and taking the blow...

...wasnt this Renault involvement due to a McLaren employee leaving and joining Renault taking along some 3 CD´s of alleged secret info?

...maybe it was a paparazzi night video footage of Ron Dennis mutating into a Bat or a wolf? ...or was that Gary Oldman...

I do remember a Ferrari employee stealing some information from his employer, and giving it to a McLaren employee.........the problem started when that McLaren employee started looking into the info and sharing it with a few people in his team, instead of going to the FIA directly......

Either way I do not remember hearing about the McLaren person who stole something from anyone else.......can you enlighten us?

 

It's called Stepneygate and happened in 2007. You might want to look it up. It ended bad for those who stole.

I believe he's referring to the new Renault investigation. McLaren have not been fingered as stealing anything in that case. Correction, Stepney gate has ended badly for the individual who stole and those that received that information as well as F1 fans around the world.

This will continue on and sooner or later it will come back around to Ferrari. I have a feeling no one is innocent in this regard.

 

If I'm asking a museum's guard to bring me that Van Gogh they have in their basement, I technically didn't steal it, because the guard did. I don't know what the legal term for that is, but it is illegal and just as punishable as the actual theft. McLaren got away easy in this case. They should have been thrown out of the championship for good.

BTW: It is not over yet. There is a good chance that several McLaren employees will go to jail. As they should.

McL didnt steal anything, yes they were found guilty of being in possession of the data but they didnt steal it - it was given to them

 

I did look into it: Read the transcripts of FIA's 2nd hearing: McLaren actively pursued information about the brake system. They went back to Stepney until they got every single detail including on how to install the system in the McLaren. That is far beyond just receiving a document in their office.

with the theft of your hypothetical Van Gogh someone has been deprived of physical property - in the actual case, we are talking about Intellectual Property, eg data.


going back to what you said earlier - i fail to see how you think its not ok for someone to give away data from their employer but think it is ok for employees to take data to a rival when they leave.
Its the same thing - one company has lost its IP to another company.


now theres no doubting that McL were in the wrong.
whether or not it was simply MC, Pink and FA acting on their own - or if other staff were also involved we simply dont and likely wont know.
But it also seems to be a fact that Renault had McL data (3 cd's worth so the story goes)
now if we use the same arguements and standards made on here with the McL case earlier this year - it doesnt matter if they used it or not, theyre guilty because they didnt give it back

 

So will that apply to Renault then..?.

Depends on what Renault did. If it is the same as McLaren, absolutely throw them out.

Stepney's actions are just as bad and he should (and most likely will) go to jail. BusinessF1 is *VERY* unkind to him in particular. They basically shred him to pieces in a background story. What is still a mistery is the question, whether he got any money for his actions.

 

No. For 2007 and arguably for 2008. (Personally I don't see the reason for a 2008 ban, nor do I understand why FIA inspectors check out the 08 McLaren.)

In the first hearing (where everybody on here lamented about how biased the FIA was towards McLaren) the FIA basically gave McLaren the benefit of the doubt. They weren't convinced, but didn't have enough to prove anything, so they left the door open by saying, that "McLaren will be removed entirely from the 07 and 08 championship if further evidence will be found". Their words, not mine. That's why I'm saying, they should consider themselves lucky having come way with just WCC points docked and 100 million dollar fine.

Not to berate the point, but I don't think that is really fair nor relevant. You could argue that Ferrari has an equally revolving door with the McLaren and the Toyota case.

At the very top of F1 it is a very small and incestuous family. It doesn't surprise me, that McLaren (or Ferrari) is a key character in two different plays.

 

I will be shocked if the investigation turns up anything.

If it does, it will effect McL's ability to get a new driver. Does Alonso know something that he hasn't told us??
