we had t bones with fries last week in san francisco at a great beer bar down by fishermans wharf for $9.99. we didn't expect much but were really surprised how good they were; and the beers were great too.
Best steak I ever ate was in Italy-bistecca fiorentina, comes from chianina cattle, Tuscany. Went to the Palm in NYC on Weds, going to Wolfgang's on Tuesday and Luger's in December-all client entertaining, otherwise I'd be broke. Think Luger's is the best but they are all good; as for store bought meat, my father, who ran a restaurant for many years, would always say the supermarket meats were of decent quality, but you had to be a little lucky. Have had good luck with Stew Leonard and Costco meats......
Jeez you guys are whiners - the good steak I buy costs $30-40 a kg ($14-18 a lb) and it's awesome! There are other cuts going around $60-80/kg, but it's usually just something to have while watching telly so haven't splashed out on those yet.
Had a typically delicious Morton's filet today along with an oversized baked potato, and skipped the veggies (sorry, Mom) to allow room to finish with the sumptuous cognac-laced chocolate cake. Price was the same as always - slightly more than a Big Mac and fries , but I always find myself wondering where in the world they get their cuts, as I can't find anything close at the local shops to prepare on the home grill... Do they get first pick of the choice cuts and the stores get whatever's left??? Damn you Morton's! -Tad
Carnivores rule! Yes, restaurants get the best cuts, usually followed by butchers and then supermarkets.
Find a GOOD butcher. I can buy USDA Prime beef all day long at a local store, and he'll cut my filet any size I want it. I've had a few 16 oz's from there before, but I can't eat that much meat any more. If I want a different cut, I tell him what I want and he'll get it in a few days. The bigger problem is, most people don't have the equipment to cook a 16oz filet, the standard backyard Weber grill won't do it without burning the outside to a crisp.
I buy prime filets for $16/lb at a small shop. $12 if I get a whole one. As good as I've had anywhere, Ruth Cris, Palm, Mortons included. Well, they went to $19/lb last week. Tried fillets at Sams Club at $10/lb. They were like cheap sirlion. At the same small shop he can order veal fillets at $19. One was 2.75 lb. My version of veal piccata yesterday. I'll have the rest tonight.
Tell him he he needs to layoff the butter. I can't eat at Ruth's Chris anymore because 1) there are way better steakhouses around and 2) it seems the butter is hiding flaws in the meat.
If cooking at home Herford (prime) NY strips or filets from Fresh Market are very good... Hooked on Ruth's again last couple of weeks, they have a new "bone in strip" with lobster knuckle as a topping...WOW. (oh and the prices have not changed). Tell Mr. Miller thank you from me! Big fan of desert at Morton's...the chocolate souffle with a Morton's coffee.
