I gotta believe we don't have the whole story. This article likely focuses on just the "Michigan" clause and there is likely another clause(s) that covers other college programs and the NFL.

I wasn't quoting the article. I read about the Michigan-only buyout the week after Appalachian State's hallmark victory. It's only for Michigan.

Knoxville, Tennessee is actually very close to Columbia, South Carolina, much closer than Gainesville.

And I'm gonna have to disagree with your opinion of Spurrier as "the best gameday coach that is currently coaching." Spurrier is the most entertaining coach in both leagues. I love his philosophy and style, which haven't changed since he won the Heisman and called himself an "amateur athlete." But he's not the best coach going. He still gambles and loses too frequently. Quarterbacks should be the easiest position for him to recruit, but Mitchell gets hot and cold, and Smelley can be just that, smelly. I love Spurrier, but he has a lot of improving to do before being annointed as the best at his job.

I wasn't talking necessarily about proximity mile-wise. More about teams that are close and have great recruiting. Fulmer has been out-recruited by Florida and Georgia in recent years. Clemson is doing pretty well, too. I'd still say UT is getting better recruits the Gamecocks, but not as competitive as UF or UGA.

I can see what you mean about QB with an example being Matt Flynn. The rest of the team can make up for his mistakes so they don't need a near-perfect QBs. Although Spurrier has always been about offense and always wanted to just heave the ball deep. I think a QB is a little more important to him than other coaches. Regardless, he won't win any titles at South Carolina. He'd definitely win some at LSU.

P.S. I heard some talk of him going to Texas A&M. :)

A thought...do you think the "big time" QB recruits get swayed when a rival coach/recruiter mentions the lack of NFL success of Spurrier coached QBs?

Well, which coaches have had great success at that position? There are really only 3 good QBs in the NFL right now. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Tony Romo. Peyton was Fulmer's only real success in the NFL. Lloyd Carr only gave Tom Brady as a good QB (Brian Griese sucks). Romo was a hidden gem. Drafting a QB is really a hit or miss sort of thing.

The only current program that has put in some good QBs is USC. Carson Palmer is a really good QB, but I'm not sold on Matt Leinart yet. I don't think John Booty will ever be a starter in the NFL unless people get injured like crazy, hahah.

Btw, a lot of NFL qbs came from small schools and from coaches not known for providing good NFL talent at that position. Ben Roethlisberger, Dan Marino, Tony Romo, etc. Ohio State isn't very good at putting QBs in the NFL, but lots of top kids want to still play for them.

I'm watching #2 Oregon vs Arizona and Ducks QB Dixon is out for the game, knee injury. For those that don't know (though not likely many on this thread), Ducks back-up QB is younger brother of Ryan Leaf.

Leaf just intercepted & Wildcats return for TD!!!

I feel terrible for Dennis Dixon. Seeing his expression on the sideline made me even feel worse. You could tell the kid wanted to play for a national championship. :( Hopefully he gets healthy for UCLA and Oregon State. I want to see them in the Rose bowl, not USC. They would've beaten Arizona last night if Leaf didn't throw that INT and the punt coverage was better (two TDs right there).

I'm telling you Thursday night is a terrible night to play if you are ranked higher this year! I like Dennis Dixon, and hope he can get back int he game this year. I really liked his answers about the Heisman thing when he has had great games. Pretty sincere and understated. Too bad Leaf didn't adjust to the game quicker, it could have been more exciting. So It looks like LSU vs. Big 12 champ for all the marbles??? I'd like to see OU get there aginst them (only because I am unfamiliar with KU and Mizzou football), but I guess if Kansas or Mizzou win out they should deserve it. Florida gets a bye this week (vs. FAU) so the UGA / KY game will probably get more attention from the UF fans than their own game.

from what it sounds like, dennis dixon is out for the year. i hope he's still considered for the heisman, he has seemingly single-handed gotten oregon to where they are (were.) and yes, given that lsu wins out, they'll play the big 12 champ, oklahomas in the championship game, and granted both ku and mizzou win tomorrow, then the winner of next week's game between these 2 will decide it. that's going to be THE game to watch next week.

Don't bank on LSU yet, Ole Miss , AK, and it looks like GA are not going to roll over for the greater glory of the SEC. This ain't the rest of the conferences, LSU still has three tough games to play.

As a Bayou Bengal fan, I'm hoping that Tennessee doesn't mis-step and we meet them in the S.E.C. championship game. Not that they'll be a pushover, it's just that Georgia is starting to come together and would be a lot tougher game. Still, Ole Miss is looking for a signature game, and Arkansas is bowl eligible, with a current 6 & 4 record and the best running game in the S.E.C. Nothing's guaranteed in this year of No 1's and No 2's getting beat by unranked opponents.

If anyone (like me) is waiting for a real playoff system to decide the national championship, you sort of have one this year for at least half of the championship game. You have three teams in the Big 12 that need to win all of their remaining games to play in the championship. Think of Kansas-Missouri as the wild card game, and Oklahoma gets the easy week before meeting one of them.

The game in Kansas City (neutral site) on 11/24 is going to be insane. Likely #2 versus #4, for the chance to play #3. The championship game in San Antonio (another neutral site!) for the Big 12 will have real national interest. All this attention this late in the season can only help the recruiting of all three teams I would think.

As for Oregon, it is too bad for them after the great year they have had. LSU will probably win out, but you never know. If LSU loses, however, the question would be who then would take on the Big 12 champion? Ohio State? West Virginia?

Tough to call if LSU loses (which I doubt will happen). I would think if tOSU wins against Michigan they would be in. WVU has a pretty weak schedule. Of course, if LSU loses, UGA or some other SEC team should probably be in the national championship game just for their strength of schedule alone....;)

What the NCAA doesn't want is another lop-sided national championship game. If LSU wins out, there's only a team or two that could give them a good game. If LSU loses a game, they're out of it, regardless of an SEC title, because of the records of other close teams.

I don't think Kansas/ WVU would be a title game worth remembering.

Oklahoma would destroy WVU imho, and I'm pretty sure the Sooners remember what happened when they last had to play the top of the SEC.

Ohio State doesn't deserve a shot simply for beating Michigan, if they do ;). The lack of a Big 10 championship game should hurt them even if they do beat the Wolverines.

So if you assume a Big 12 is one side of the championship, who is the other half IF LSU loses? I would be surprised if it is any 2 loss team. So WVU or tOSU would be the only real choices, unless KU loses against Mizzou. I doubt we would see KU ranked high enough to be a viable candidate. WVU is not so good, tOSU is not so good, really nobody is SO good this year in that case. Maybe ASU makes it up if they beat USC? If any two loss team makes it to the championship over some one loss teams, there would be an even bigger push for a playoff system. Personally, I see LSU and OU in the championship game.

Tebow got his 20th rushing TD today. New SEC record. He was tied with Shaun Alexander before at 19. :) Tebow is the 1st QB in Division I history to have 20 rushing and passing TDs in a season. How can he be denied a Heisman?!

I agree, but I still think OU-Georgia would be a great national championship game.
