I own property in Kansas. I want to Title my new 2008 Ferrari in Kansas. What's involved? Does the Motor Vehicle Dept have to physically see the Ferrari? Is there a smog test on new cars and how often? How much are the license plate fees? thank you

As far as I remember they just check to see if the motor runs and if the lights and horn works. Thats it. They don't do any smog check. When I had my 00 GMC truck done I have headers and no cats on it with only a bullet 12 inch muffler and they didn't say anything.

You have to get the car inspected before they will issue a title, so yes they do have to see the car and title. Not expensive, I think about $10. Then you have tag fees of not much, but the kicker is if you have not paid sales tax, which I am assuming you will have to pay tax by where in Kansas the car is registered, say 7.25% and then you have annual property tax due as well, on a new F-car you are several $1000s per year. You can call the Kansas Dept of Revenue in Topeka and they can give you an estimate I would think. I would compare your situation to other locations that you live in, if you owned property in Oklahoma or Oregon it would be much better.

if it has an out of state title, you will have to drive it here and have it inspected for the odometer and VINs to make sure it is not a stolen vehicle. If it is brand new and has a MSO, then you may not have to do this.

I live in KS and the last several new cars that I have taken to get registered, they did not inspect (I did go in-person to do the paperwork and pay the fees). Some were bought at dealers in other States. Per the website for Johnson County (http://dmv.jocogov.org/license.htm) "An inspection is not necessary if the car has a manufacturer's CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN."

When I moved to KS, they did an inspection on my cars that had been previously registered in my prior State, and no sales tax was due since I had paid it in that State.

As mentioned, Kansas has property tax in addition to sales tax.

Why in the world would you want to title the car in Kansas? It is one of the highest states to title a car in.

Better shop your other states of residency....

2008 Ferrari, are you crazy. Our 2004 Avelanche was over $500 Property tax in 2004. Collectables like our 81 308 for 2007 property tax and registration less than $50.

The best thing about Kansas is No matter where you go on vacation it is always better than where you came from.

Moved to Los Angles CA, moved back because no matter where we went on vacation it was better at home in L.A..
