Martin is one of the most experienced F40 techs having worked on them since he performed pre-delivery on the first 17 cars cars to come through Southern California from 1990 on.

Here is another corny pic of me with Martin, who cant wait to get his sticky fingers all over 85596. I noticed that America The Beautiful was playing over the workshop speakers - the Ray Charles version.

Whilst there, the Classiche Certification will be done by John Amette who has just completed it on Gerald B's fine example (pictured in the image in the previous post in the showroom awaiting collection).

    Dear Comrade 410SA,

Joe has gone completely off the rails. This apart, it is my understanding that the Tubi exhaust reduces the performance and this is by Joe's own admission ( I think) and no doubt someone, if not the illustrious Joe himself will correct me should this not be the case.

    With kind regards,

You are very mistaken, THAT Tubi raises performance a little. And sounds GREAT!

The only Tubi that "may" loose a little performance as you say would be the straight through LM system. This is due to it not having mufflers and not having enough back pressure.

    Dear Comrade SSNISTR,

All this business about noise is just too much for me to bear. The Tubi exhausts should be outlawed and heavy fines imposed upon those that use them merely for the purposes of aural pornography.

    With kind regards,

    Dear Graham,

The Tubi 'zorst system as fitted to my own car delivers a symphonic sound that upon open throttle has a warming effect right down to the cockles of my heart. This in turn causes a sheepish grin to form on my face.
However, a while back I entered into discussions with Tubi because their systems have a particulary "tinny" resonance, especially the LM units. This is characteristic of stainless teel units and perhaps thats why the old mild steel units as fitted to earlier classic Ferraris sound so
much better by comparison. The solution? Inconel, which has a rich sound without the resonant qualities of a stainless steel unit, yet it has even better cooling properties and as such is used on the Formula One cars. I remember standing behind an F40 LM fitted with an inconel system recently, and when it was fired up and barked into life I thought: Oh. My. God. Every F40 should sound like that. BTW I have not been the same since :)
Anyway, I will experiment with the unit when it arrives from Italy and report back the faithful. It is finished in the matte grey/bronze that is the same hue as seen on the LM cars - none of the flashy shiny finish of the stainless steel system, more in keeping with the original character of the engine bay. It contains built-in nozzles to provide required back-pressure, and the wastegate is adjusted slighty in concert. The folks who are making it promise that it will sound, as the Italians say, "Basso Supremo!"

Within 5 minutes of discussing the list Id prepared for Martin at FMOC for my F40, he diagnosed exactly why my rear hood was slightly out of alignment upon closing. Apparently the rear valance in many F40s is mounted to the chassis ever-so-slightly askew and thus the receptacles to receive & secure the upper hood when it closes are slightly off the mark. This causes the rear hood upon closure to have different gaps on either side of the car. An easy fix really, but the valance (43) has to come off and be re-mounted correctly (it has play for adjustmet at A), and presto, it will align properly on both sides.

Also the misalignment of the rear hood can/will cause the inside strip of the rear bumper moulding to shatter/crack and Ive witnessed this in half-dozen F40s.

"Solo Per Versione USA". Love that.

No, Ive definatley seen this 'ailment' across the range of model years for the USA cars, as with any of the other issues Ive noted.

When he is on vacation Bjoern Schmidt not only points his trusty lens at fine cars, but he writes down the chassis numbers too. The next few posts are all the work of a man I encountered 5 years ago whilst gathering archive images for my own library. Thanks Bjoern.

This image depicts 84944 in 2004 awaiting the Bonhams auctioneer's gavel... it is the 3rd USA F40 built.

    Dear Comrade joe sackey,

This information is very much appreciated indeed. My car has this 'problem' and when it attends the surgery for its annual service in 2008 I shall make sure this drawing is in the car so that they can remedy the matter.

The inconel exhaust sounds very interesting indeed.

You will be interested to learn that I spent Friday at Thruxton Motor Racing Circuit driving various motor cars including a single seater - not an F1, but a Formula Renault; great fun nevertheless!

    Thank you again.

    Graham,

As I have said many times before, the quality of finish and the various maladies that affect F40s are present and similar throughout most of the later model years 90/91/92, and the issue with your 92 car proves same.

I will keep you posted of inconel unit with pics and feedback no doubt.

    Dear Comrade joe sackey,

Not quite the case Joe. Accordingly, the rear skirt of my car became slightly misaligned after the suspension upgrades were performed by the concessionaires - nothing to do with Ferrari!

Therefore the English F-40 still reigns supreme. Furthermore, 410SA has had numerous F-40's and he has stated on numerous occasions that he would have nothing else but a 1992 model. Did I happen to mention that my car has the final chassis number? All others were created merely as stepping stones to the perfection of the final incarnate ;-)

If you care to pm your address I shall be pleased to send a booklet that has come into my possession from the aforementioned concessionaires detailing every Ferrari road car replete with numbers produced and the price at time of launch.

    With kind regards,

    512 Tea Are
