Three things you should know before buying a Diablo are.

1) It is the best looking car ever made, period ! ...but you know that

2) The car is reliable, you will only need a new clutch if you don't know how to drive.

3) If you decide to take it to a Ferrari club event you will be the envy of every fcar owner there. It really bugs them how Diablo's always have a crowd around them, and their 360 spiders blend in with the chevy pick-ups.

Well said. The reaction depends on the model too.

For a VT

1) It looks stunning

2) 4 wheel drive does make "normal" driving easier

3) Still draws a crowd in presence of newer exotics (yes, the Diablo does get more looks than a standard murci and many f-cars)

SV

1) RWD

2) Awesome air intakes add to the stunning looks

3) Sounds evil

In general

1) Know which model you want

2) Generally, the newer the model year, the better (ie. a 96 vs a 99)

3) Like Roy said, they don't make 'em any more

 

I agree w/ Roy and Joshua. To me, one of the most compelling aspects of ownership is that the car is not evolutionary...there is no better version coming down the pipeline. Sure Lambo continues to make faster cars, but I think everyone will agree that the new ones are just different--not necessarily bad, just different. The result is you don't ever really feel like selling the car--no matter how much of a car flipper you were prior to buying the Diablo!
So here's my 3:
1) they are deceptively driveable
2) be prepared for a "I still can't believe I own this car" feeling despite having owned it for years...
3) many people by for looks, but end up pleasantly surprised by the by the violent performance (put me in that category--esp w/ the 530+ hp cars)

 

Anytime a Diablo leaves the garage it's an "event". You will be amazed by all the cell phone cameras that you see anytime you go for a drive.

Buy it !

I own a 97.5 Diablo VT Roadster. I drive it as a daily driver in all weather. The car really is fantastic. I use it to drive between my homes in GA and FL. In fact I just came back from my GA home last night from a 2800 mile round trip with errands up at the other home.

The car is reliable but like any other woman...I mean exotic, it has issues. Prepare to study and learn about the car. If you enjoy working on the car ( I do ! ) you will enjoy it. There is alwayyyys something to work on. Post 96 have OBD II. It has more electronics but buy a top quality scanner and with Lchat's advice, you'll get through it.

The clutch is expensive but is really driver related. ( no timing belts )If you get off the line with high revs, you will burn it. Get off the line, get fully engaged....then punch it to redline. I like to redline the gears in my Diablo and my Ferrari.

Do be prepared for the attention. I also drive a 91 Ferrari Testarossa so I though it would be more of the same...... Nooooooo way. All the way up and back on the I 75, camera phones clicking, cars running parallel, the odd corvette or mustang trying to pull a sharp lane change in front of me. ( I laugh and give them the "L" sign on the forehead..( that means loser ) )

If you stop at a gas stn. ( In a diablo you will ) prepare to be swarmed by a crowd. There really is something about a Diablo that clicks with people that the Ferrari just doesn't do.

Learn patience with people asking the same questions and prepare to let people sit in the seat.... I don't mind. (when you own the company..you're never late )

Great for picking up chicks! Unfortunatly, too many 16 year old cheerleaders give you attention as well. ( A minivan of them all wanted a photo of the car at a Gas stn. in Valdosta ) : rolleyes

BTW, I was parked next to a murci once....guess which car got all the attention....the Diablo !

No doubt it is the most beautiful car Lamborghini has created, but be prepared for a lack of parts availablility on the early Diablos, I have experienced that with both cars. I love the Diablo, but finding parts is ridiculously difficult, so be prepared. And if you thought Ferrari parts were expensive, you're in for a surprise. With that said, I wouldn't even trade my Diablo for a million dollar car, the Diablo is by far the sexiest of all. And as everyone has already said, be prepared for all the camera phones when you pull up to a gas station. This car draws a crowd like a movie star.

There is no sexier car on the planet........

 

The mere fact that people say you "need to know how to drive" to not kill a Diablo clutch speaks volumes. I have never owned one, but quite a few friends have. And when you look at Diablos out there, tons of them have clutches done. That speaks volumes.

I've owned lots of cars that I generally take to the drag strip and race. I expect any car to be able to handle 1/4 passes on occasion without major failure. The fact that a Diablo cannot is a very clear metric that the clutch is weak. There are few cars on the road that are as fragile in the clutch department.

A correct statement would not be "if you dont know how to drive you will kill the clutch" but rather "if you don't baby the clutch you will kill it".

That wouldn't stop me from owning the car - great machine and great looking car. Being such a small volume car, people need to realize that the engineering will not be the same as you'd find on a BMW or such, and these cars were designed and produced during a time when Lambo was struggling to stay alive. They are not fantastic drivers cars, but when it comes to wow-factor and smiles per mile, I doubt much else comes close, if anything.

 

It's pretty much a factor of physics.

You have a heavy car

4 wheel drive (most of them)

A lot of rubber on the ground

If you try to launch, the clutch is the loser.

They weren't designed for the dragstrip and that's really just fine with me.

I've only ridden in one.

No driving experience.

Fantastic ride.

Not too hard.

Be careful though...

6.0's have a bad habit of scraping

FACT :America is the only country in the world where 98% of cars are automatic

therefore clutch pedal is a little "strange" item over there .


is that a factor about all those horror exotic car's clutch tales or stories ?

P.S. I mean I hate all those Automatic cars as they are boringly underpowered , every single car I' ever bought it must be a 3 pedal manual car
