Technician job

It helps to know where you are located.

 

The techs I've talked-to cut their teeth on BMW and Mercedes dealerships for a few years, went to a competent trade school specializing on high-end Euro machines, and had a genuine love of the profession. They were the kind of guys who took direction from the older, more experienced guys, and had an interest in learning new things. If you have a chip on your shoulder and are unhappy with your lot in life, you will NOT last long in a shop that charges $120/hour. For that kind of money, customers demand and expect skilled, competent professional work - not some high-school hack that turns wrenches to punch a clock.

 

Don't take it personal - if the shoe fits, well, I wouldn't want someone like that working on my car. So I guess my recommendation would be 'don't be "That Guy." Experiences may vary, but the best techs I've ever known had some exposure to working at a Dealership and were afforded make-specific factory training. Since Ferraris are NOT disposable cars, one can reasonably expect to see early CIS and carbeurated cars from all vintages come into the shop, not just a line of 360s and 430s that support modern computerized diagnostics. How techs learn the full line over time is up to the individual shop they work for, but from my own experiences and talking with others who have had service work done, not everyone is doing things 'right' by the new tech OR the customer. Most shops won't allow a customer to pick-and-choose who touches their car, if they did, the bad apples would get weeded out and there wouldn't be problems. I've met some truly great mechanics, and I have met some hacks who shouldn't be going anywhere near a Ferrari with a wrench (sometimes, myself included).

 

I think, in short, what Mike is trying to say is that it's not easy to become a good Ferrari tech, and that there's a pretty big entry barrier. It's not like a good shop will just hire anybody off the street, even if you have a lot of non-Ferrari experience.

LOL.....I'm much better with blunt instruments! BTW, we found what was causing all the noise in my 308 yesterday....and it wasn't a non-firing cylinder, thank god.

Use the search and find out who the indies are that are recommended on this forum. Give em a call and talk to the owners. Call service managers at the dealships. The people you need to talk to don't post here for the most part. Do your homework.
