3 days ago it started to get these dark spots in the two bottom corners and now it has grown to include the entire bottom of the TV. It is a Hitachi 60 something inch bought New in like 2005 or so. Model #65S500 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
It looks like it's melting its self. Did it come with a warranty? Btw those are awful shows that you watch.
With regular tv's the cost to repair often reaches the same cost of replacement. You should call around to a few tv repair shops and ask some Q's. Have your model # handy and perhaps you can offer to email them the photos of the screen {to save a $90 service call *rolls eyes*}
+1. I just googled your set and it's a rear projection CRT. I'd guess something is leaking onto the projection lens, but either way, you're going to have to get inside to take a look.
Depending when in 2005... dont forget, depending on the card, "double manufacturer's warranty... upto one year". Maybe an option if you have the bill or some proof of purchase?
What I don't understand is how your post time is one hour earlier than the time you took the pictures
It could be the tuner or the signal board...happened with the parents TV the part was around $500 and then the labor :S If you don't have the extended warranty it might be cheaper to replace
Hooked:Caught Bare Handed haaa, i watched some of this tonight Just when you think red-necks couldn't get any red-neckier... (diving into the local mudhole/river and fishing for 3-5 foot river channel catfish barehanded)
I had that happen to my old 67", i forgot what the reason was but i think something burned out, and they came to put a new part in and worked as before..
+1, it probably will cost more to fix it, than to replace it, plus a HD-TV or something new couldnt hurt.
maybe the TV wants you to get a nice, shiny new LCD or Plasma. On Black Friday, Circuit city has a 46" Sharp 1080p LCD for around 1499, i think, and Sears has a 40" 1080p LCD for 1399, which is the set, I will be picking up on friday.
lol! if you can even find a rear projection tv, (which you can probably still do, although i know best buy has stopped carrying them) you can probably replace this one with a comparable size for less than a grand. good luck though on getting it fixed!
I picked up the 1080p Panasonic 42" Plasma (TH-42PZ77U) for $1050 at Sears last week, with 60-day price match. Boscov's has the 720p 42" Panasonic TH-42PX77U for $799 this week, which is damn cheap.
UPDATE: I disassembled the TV myself. (No,I have zero mechanical ability), but I said what the heck. I wasn't going to pay to have it brought to the shop, charged to "tell" me what was wrong, then have to pay a crazy repair and then pay to have it brought back home. I looked at it as a total loss and then tore into it. Ended up being Cleaner/Fluid in between the 3 screens that were glued together from my 11 yr old cleaning the TV. You see the darkness from the other side of the screens in the one shot. got 80% of it out, all you can see now is the outline where it used to be dark, plus I split the center screen in two different spots trying to peel it back. the split shows like a tiny crack in the screen that noone has noticed unless I point it out. Wholly cow! We weren't serious when we suggested you take it apart. Good for you. You just saved a butt-load of cash my friend.
