Well it's that time of year again. Who will be the first to post a link to a legitimate news story concerning this year's redneck who overfills his turkey fryer with peanut oil, and it overflows into the gas burner, igniting his wooden deck and then turning his entire house into a giant inferno? It happens every year somewhere. Extra bonus points if the house is a doublewide mobile home! DOUBLE bonus points if there is a pre-1982 Camaro or Firebird parked in the yard. POST OF THE YEAR award if the Camaro or Firebird is consumed in the blaze!!!

    Let's run through the checklist:

    Turkey -- Check

    Gas fired burner -- Check

Lots and lots of superheated oil -- Check

Keg of beer -- Double Check

    Next stop?

    Darwin awards.

I wouldn't be surprised if we had a winner on Wednesday because the people forgot which day was Thanksgiving.
I'm still surprised that people burn down their houses year after year for the same damn thing, PEOPLE LEARN. Then again, that is why the Darwin Awards exist.

i just started deep frying birds this past summer. I gotta say , DAMN GOOD !!!!!!!!!!!! I did however worry about a freek mishap and burning down my house. Before starting I made sure my big pot of peanut oil was farrrrrrrrrr away from the house [ preferably, near the neighbors pad ] i also made sure to move the firebird outa the drive, but most important --- i made sure i had a fire extinguisher handy and ready. If i burn anything down, you can bet your asses I ll post pics here.

Sorry, the mayhem has already begun in Tonganoxie City. Do turkey smokers count? ;)

The fire chief estimated loss of about $30,000, as the garage sustained severe damage. A newer Kaboda lawn and garden tractor also was in the garage, Bennett said.

"I'd never seen one like this," Bennett said. "It was like an old refrigerator that was turned into a smoker."

True story. My brother who is a well to do investment banker decided to do a turkey at a friends house for a birthday party shortly after Thanksgiving. We did a turkey for the big day and he took notes. Of note, he has limited cooking skills. So he sets up the fryer in the middle of his friends driveway and starts the flame. He put in the right amount of oil and walked away for a bit - I think to get a glass of wine. Came back and the temp was reading 250 degrees. Waited for a while, but the temp did not budge. It is getting late and folks are getting hungry, so he cranks the flame up to high. Still the temp does not move. He decides to put the bird in an will let it cook longer. He put the bird in and all hell breaks loose. Oil spatters all over, luckinly missing him. The driveway is a mess. About 2 minutes later the whole vat explodes and the turkey shoot up in the air about 50 feet and is on fire like a Roman candle. Lands on the ground and is essentially disintegrated. Turns out the temp has way off the scale. The thermometer had passed all the way around and was well past 800 degrees or whatever the max is on the thermometer. Luckily no one was hurt, and no one was outside with him to see. He ordered pizza!!!!

Sorry, but a turkey smoker produces more of a conventional "wood fed" blaze that just can't compete with the gigantic fireball effect of a genuine turkey fryer disaster.

I saw some turkey fryers on sale at Sam's Club a couple weeks back, in all honesty I think Walmart is intent on thinning out their heard of customers.

Just like a turkey fryer, minus the boiling, hot oil and visits from your local firefighters.

Long time friend of the family burnt down his house, RV, Boat, and Harley in a turkey fryer fire last year. Hot oil went from the fryer down the drive to a 5 gal plastic gas can in the garage which then set off 50 Gal drum of racing fuel. He also got 3rd degree burns on his arms and legs. He barely survived that one.

Any updates? Any burned down trailer parks? No incinerated Firebirds or El Caminos? None around here that I heard of.

I was wondering the same thing unless the typical turkey friers already had their homes foreclosed on so there's nothing to burn down.

Not exactly a turkey fryer, but we had to move my oldest girl out of her apartment in Charleston because an arsonist is burning down houses rented to college students in an anti-gentrification backlash. At least thats the theory.

Generally with the students in the houses asleep.

My wife told me 2 students were injured escaping from a second story window.
