F40 or CGT

    Have the opportunity to purchase CGT or F40 at the same price. Thinking very hard about it. Same mileage more or less @ 5k each. 1993 F40 or 2004 CGT. Which one do you choose? Obviously the CGT being more modern with things like air con is probably more useable and more civilised but at the same time can give a hell of a thrill as well. F40, well we all know what that is about. So which one do you choose?

    F40, it'll apreciate more and is just as quick as a CGT.

    CGT probably is the sensible choice if you intend to use it on a regular basis.

    They are very different cars. The F4 is raw, abrupt, crude and thrilling
    The CGT is sophisticated, state of the art engine and chassis dynamics, very fast and thrilling.

    I like thrilling so I bought them both :)

    Looks like you've had more Porsches than Ferraris in the past...at least from your profile.

    I'd go with the F40 simply to even the score...:)

    But Alex is right--it would be impossible to go wrong with either!

    Well there never was a 1993 F40, 1992 was the last year excluding some race cars built afterwards.

    The F40 has A/C as well.

    The F40 is my choice, more thrilling, fun car. Not to mention the CGT will lose $$$$, while the F40 will gain $$$$ over time.

    as far as performance goes, the cgt has an extra 125hp, and far greater use of modern technology, it revs quicker than any car i have ever driven......actually, the cgt was built in smaller numbers than the ferrari f40....but the f40 will probably appreciate more over the long term due to the fact its a ferrari..........i would take the cgt everytime, but i have never driven the f40...plus, the cgt is an open top, which is a nice bonus

    If they are the same price, based on what I've seen here on this forum, that's either a great deal on an F40, or a really bad deal on a CGT. :)

    My vote is for the F40.

    Since you can speak from experience maybe it would be beneficial to compare maintenance costs?... :)

    Seems like I'm always agreeing with your posts lately ... :D

    I'm asked this question at least once a week ... "which do you like better or which is faster?" The two cars couldn't be more different in every way. They put the power down so differently - immense instant torque from the CGT and some lag followed by an explosion of turbos from the F40. As 410SA indicated ... both immensely thrilling in their own right.

    If I had to choose? Hmmmm ... ummmm .... Nope! Can't choose ... :)

    Tough choice my friend ...

    CGT is still under warranty but I've completed an oil/filter service and replaced the battery last week. Oil change was $900. Battery replacement (labor and battery) was $987. One thing I dread is having to replace the clutch at some point. From what I hear the clutch replacement cost is around $24,000 on the CGT.

    Full service for a F40 can run $10,000+ easily. Add a clutch and whatever else it might need and you can be at $20,000 in a blink of an eye.

    Neither car is cheap to own in terms of maintenance. :(

    That is a question I get oft asked as well....I can only say this, if only allowed to keep one, it would be the F40.

    Both cars are evocative, thrilling to drive, wonderful to gaze upon, and audio delights. Each can be described as effort-intensive to drive, but what a reward ! The sensory feedback from each car is instantaneous, and every little piece of debris on the road clatters against the undersides...marvellous !

    I think the difference for me is evident as I enter the garage from the kitchen....my eyes automatically track over to the red beast and look upon that gently sloped front and purposeful haunches....after a drive in the F40, I find myself coming down from the experience for a good 30 minutes afterwards...maybe only for 5 minutes after the CGT...

    It is hard to quantify, and like choosing between two kids....but the edge for me goes to Enzo's last masterpiece....luckily, I have no intention of parting with either.

    My CGT has been driven in sleet, rain, and an indicated temp range of -15F to 109F...all while demonstrating the same oil/water/cockpit temps each time....german engineering at its finest.

    F40 air conditioning is very good indeed. It is a thriller, and bound to appreciate. Dont know much about the other.

    F40 only for the look, power, sound, history nd most principal it s a Ferrari. As he said coachi don t know about the other....:)

    Well both are on sale for 230K pounds. For the Uk and even europe these are roughly the going rates. I have been looking at them both for quite a while. The thing is if I am going to only have one supercar, which I can just get into and drive to say somewhere on a night out I feel I can do it easier in the CGT(yes I know you can of course do the same in the F40 if you REALLY want to, but I suppose it has probably got to be more of an occasion to bring out the F40!) Maintenance costs are probably similar in the long run of course and long term investment-well anyones guess I suppose. I was 99% going with the CGT but maybe I shouldnt have asked which has put some doubt into my mind. Tough - but I suppose also priviliged and great - choice in the end!

    Isn't this like comparing two $5M homes based upon how much it will cost to paint them? Maintenance costs on out of warranty exotics and all race cars are an "open checkbook" proposition. If that will cause a prospective buyer heartburn, I highly recommend they walk away.

    FWIW, the siren battery on my 550 has croaked, so I'll be soon tithing at my local Ferrari dealership. Won't let it bother me....won't let it bother me....won't..

    I am also of the belief you should choose the F40. Its value is increasing, it has amazing looks, and is what I consider to be the last true sports car before technology started getting in the way with stability assists, TCS, and everything else. An F40 is a car that can give you a heart attack just by looking at it. I have driven the Carrera GT, and it is a VERY capable car that screams like an F1 beast, but the F40 is just in a different league to me. Think about the last time you saw one out...or even in a showroom? You never do. The car is unique in more ways than one.

    I've had the opportunity to drive/own a number of Ferrari's (and only a few Porsche's) around town and at speed.
    I very rarely test drive a vehicle before buying as I know what to expect being a car fanatic, but that aside I think with such
    a big decision you need to look at them, sit in them, turn the key and drive each one individually to really appreciate and absorb what each one is about.

    I think after this and after you've had time to reflect, your heart will make the decision not your head

    I wish this were my dilemma...
    The F40 gets my vote. I have seen CGTs but never a F40. When I see my first I will have to restrain myself.
