I vaguely seem to remember a time when the "H" shaped goal post on a college field was actually on the goal line. Was that true or do I remember it wrongly? when was it changed ?

I know the goal post used to be in the middle of the end zone. So sometimes players ran into it :D.

    Thanks Tillman.

    Nextquestion:

Do any College or Pro Quarterbacks still call their own plays, other than audibles at the line?

Calling plays is mainly up to the O-Coordinator and Coach, usually along with somewhat up in a box.
The only QB that comes to mind would be Peyton Manning, he definitely calls his own audibles but I'm not sure whether or not he has a say in the play selection.

The posts were moved to the back of the end zone prior to the 1974 NFL season, not sure about college ball.

i think the answer to this question lies in the coaching. some coaches allow their players more freedom to make calls then others, audibles are entirely on the qb. if you're watching a game and notice a timeout being called at a completely questionable time, like your team up by 10 with 7 minutes to play, it's usually the fact that the coach called the play, the qb couldn't call an audible in time, and had to rethink the play with the coach due to a defensive formation that the qb thought would break up the called play easily.

The pros had it on the goal line but moved it to the rear like college, high school, et al as too many field goals were kicked and not enough touch downs.

I also remember when you had to play both offense and defense. That's when men were men. I played WR and Safety (in High School). Sometimes halfback. Played on special teams too. Loved to smear the punt receiver. The good old days indeed.

Also, I remember on pros where you weren't down until you were held down. If you could get up again so be it. Too many injuries from piling on and they had to change the rules.

Then there is the two point PAT for not kicking the PAT but running or passing it. this started in college and then finally went to the pros. Cut down on ties. there was no overtime. If the score ended in a tie then you got half a win and half a loss.

Football stems from rugby and the rugby posts are on the try (goal) line. I believe it was somewhere around 65 when they moved the gridiron ones back. The rugby posts are still on the lines today.

They used to have designed pass patterns crossing behind the goal post to loose the defender.

Cool picture. I couldn't believe it when I read that the Orange Bowl had been in use for over 70 years! They just shut it down.

Regarding QBs and play calling, these days the games are so complex that it's usually more a version of scripting, with certain deviations on tap for audibles. Plus, in the NFL, the QB has the advantage of an ear radio to receive plays from upstairs. He can audible, but he's not alone calling the shots.

Several years ago I met the last two way (REAL TWO WAY) player from the NFL. Chuck Bednarik. Played for the EAGLES!!!

What a guy he is. His hands look like they've been run through a blender. He is one snarly men ornery guy, even in his late 70's. Linebacker and center.

    ahh.... those were the days.

What about my boy, DEION. He played on three sides of the football, and 2 DIFFERENT SPORTS.

But guys like Bednarik played 60 minutes. Even though Deion played extensively, and well, he would come out in certain situations. The game's much more specialized these days.

In the pre-game show (Pats vs Gmen) on the NFL Channel they showed the 1942 undefeated Bears against the Redskins. The H goalpost was on the goal line. BTW the Redskins won the NFL Championship.
