Winter storage tips!

Your post makes me laugh, not because its idiotic in any way, but because I've never seen such a question related to Ferrari ownership though, under some circumstances, it could be viewed as legitimate.

After all, many ferrari die-hards will spend hundreds of dollars to put a 3M cover on their car just to keep bug stains off the paint. Others will simply refuse to drive their F cars in the rain. The thought of a rust proofed F car slidding around with chains in a Montreal snow storm is enough to cause most Ferraristas to have thrombosis, if not a heart attack.

Were I to see a rust proofed ferrari, I'd probably run on the suspicion it had been used for party trips up to Alaska and back.

Chris...i posted up a post a few years ago about rust proofing....i was going to do it, but was advised by many that was not necessary on the newer type of cars...like a 308QV, they do come rust proofed from the factory, and really if your not into the rain often and stored properly you will have no need to rust proof. I have a 76 308 and the underneath is still very rust and spot free....and this car was not rust proofed. Its all how you store it in the winter as well and how you wash it. If you have a heated garage at home, and wash your car 1 or 2 times a year like i do and dont drive in the rain...your fine.

 

Rick....you only wash your cars once or twice a year?......I keep my car in a heated garage and I still have to clean it at least once a week if I don't drive it.....if I do drive it....it needs a good wash just to get the bugs and dust off of it. You must have the force field option on your cars.....that repels bugs and dirt....I'm gonna look into getting that option on my next car....

 

Rick just drives his cars through hurricane type storms to clean them. Once his TR starts getting blisters around the strakes from corroding aluminum he'll wish he had rust proofed the car. The plastic 308 with rusty rockers is another story.

 

Joe, i wash it once when i take it out of storage...it goes in for a full cleaning when i do the basic service to get her on the road. Then i may have to clean it again come fall......i have never fully washed my car(s) more than 1 or 2 times a year . I also have a heated garage, and i use the wolf 3 car covers 2 per car....yes i get dust, and road film on the lower panels, but i dont wash the car...i only clean the rims.

 

My car is in a heated garage and when it's not being driven it has a cover on it. Like Rick I wash my car 2-3 times a year sometimes more if I get caught in the rain. Only rust is a bubble behind the drivers side door which was there when I bought the car and is easy enough to fix. As long as the car is stored in a dry place there should be no issues...

 

I have no issues as far as rust...being that my car is almost all carbon fibre.....but what about all the bugs and stuff in the front? I can wash my car in the morning....and if I take it out during the day.....or even worse....at night....the whole front is plastered in bugs....including my windshield.....so what do you do....wash only half the car?....Some of those bugs need some real muscle to get them off....a simple dusting won't do it.

Joe, maybe thats the difference for me....i never go out during the day, or evening....i dont think i have ever taken the car out in 9 yrs at night....my drives 90% of the time are early morning. I have had the odd bug on the window and windex it out....i have had the odd bug or fly on the bumper and just got a very very wet rag and wipped it off. Aside from brake dust which i clean the same way...wet rag...not much for me to clean.

 

Make sure to put in a dehumidifier...most garages are moist even when heated and warm MOIST air can be deadly on carbon steel...This is even more important if half of the garage is used for the "winter car".

Big Red...do you put a lead substitute in the gas for your glass car?

 

The cars dont share sapce with the daily drivers.

As for lead substitute, no i do not....i use Sunco 94...and have been running it all summer with no issues.

 

I always tell my clients that if you plan to keep the car longer than four years, and will be driving in winter, to get it rust proofed. It usually costs under $100, and if done right it will completely stop rust from forming. The only downside is you have to deal with a dirty engine, but most guys can live with that.

After my search on winter storage and all the different opinions, I am still a little confused.

If I store in heated garage, is it ok not to start the 360 until spring,

I have recently changed all fluids, and I will inflate tires and used a battery tender.

If you can i would start it 1 a month....let it run for a full 2 fan rad cycle....pump the brakes, if you can move it up and down a few feet as well. It will serve you well until the spring.
