Just got a letter from the DMV, and due to budgetary considerations, Wisconsin will no longer test cars over 10 years old?! This starts in 2008/2009.

Wow!!! So they are limiting themseves mostly to OBD type checks, and also going to get rid of the rolling tests...

Go figure. I would think most cars 10 years or newer would easily pass. Its the old cars that flunk. And there are substantial numbers of pre-1998 cars on the road, dont you think?

I guess this was my Christmas gift :). All of you in Illinois, feel free to buy a cottage/vacation home up here to register your car :).

Hmmm, just had the 328 emissions tested a couple weeks ago. Passed easily, but it was a waste of time for just an idle test. They could easily do away with that and not affect air quality at all.

Did you get this letter because your registration is due for renewal?

Tn. goes back to 1975 for testing and Florida has none at all. Florida has stopped for like 5 years now. Most of the newer cars really don't need testing. I have to take my 512tr in as soon as I get the chance.

Our problem up here is the auto-start and letting a car idle for 30 minutes in the driveway in the winter (mine are both in the garage). Nice and warm at negative tempatures, but if we have an air problem, that is the cause. My cars pass easily when warm, but would be borderline when cold.

Congrats on one less expenditure on the car.

Why, that's the way it is in IL too. I believe it's 95 and newer that have to be tested.

What used to be ridiculous and a pain in the ass, was having to bring my Rolls Royce in for inspection. All that was ever tested was the petrol cap. What a waste!

Seems like you set your clock by that. In my years in Madison it seems like it ALWAYS snowed on Thanksgiving.

    Easy there bro.

Clear blue sky, about 50 degrees out there, a bit of frost on the roof.

If the Governator had't mucked about with the smog laws my 77 would now be exempt.

    Some good and some bad.

    Happy thanksgiving,
    chris

If you were not concerned with keeping the car original, what kind of horsepower could you expect from a car like the 2V injected V8 of the 308 or Mondial 8? Assuming you could take off the restrictive equipment that doesn't work nearly as well as newer items of course.

So a new exhaust, air filter, cam profile, and fuel injection mapping, would high 200's (or even 300 hp) be possible, now that many states are not sniffing the tailpipe?

Did that change recently? I had to have my '76 checked 9-10 years ago. And one of my friends just had to do his 87 testarossa. Perhaps its a regional variance??? We lived in the southern suburbs...

It's all of Illinois and 2007 is the last year for emission tests for any car without OBDII. In other words, it starts in 2008.

bpu699, maybe you missed my question -

Did you get this letter because your registration is due for renewal? I have several old cars and haven't heard anything and there's no information on the internet that I can find.

Having just moved from Madison, I can tell you, you didn't have to get ANY car tested for emissions in Dane County. Milwaukee, Racine, Waukesha, Kenosha, Jefferson, Walworth, YES. But not Dane.

It was a shock in Madison to NOT have to test my cars.
