Another one of my very favorite photos from my collection. Nereo Iori in 1967, my dear friend and mentor doing what he did best. Iori knew these cars cold.

There is a single air inlet near the headlight on the driver's side. Was that to help cool the driver?

My gosh, look at the tiny roll hoop. It looks like it is wicker! How scary in a car with this much power and speed.

Looks like David Diper's 412P #0854 after it's pitlane accident during the 1967 Kyalami 9 Hours.

Note the (non-standard) shape of the radiator opening in the fiberglass nose section, prior to the accident:

I wasn't around to witness the 60s first hand but do fully agree that it was the best era for motorsport.

    But why?

Was it just before too much legislation got in the way (noise, production numbers, etc)?
Was it that the privateers could run teams and be competetive and offer the variety of colours?
Was it that you could wander the paddock and be part of the action?
    Was it the drivers?
    Was it the teams?
    Was it the characters?

    All of the above....

It is definately the 1967 Kyalami 9 Hours, Bruno.

Piper's co-driver was Dickie Attwood (who had the accident in the pit-lane) - not Jo Siffert - Barchetta is wrong about that.

.... and yes, the car still managed to finish 5th in that (damaged) condition ! See this book - page 160. ;)

You're right... The 30s, 40s, and 50s were also interesting times, with great drivers and beautifull cars.

Yes, it was Kyalami 1967... I like the Renault 8 behind #0854... Today, this wouldn't be possible. My dad had one in the 60s. A nice and good little French car. I think this one is a Gordini. What's the car behind #0854 in the color photo...?

Well spotted, Francis. Apart from the chequered roof, there weren't many clues - and I was only guessing. ;)
