Hey gang, One of my buddies was looking at a 348 Spider for purchase - called me with this question. When the top is down and I raise the windows, they automatically position themselves at a level about 1 & 3/4 inches short of the extreme top. Is this normal? Can anyone with Spider experience, shed some light on this matter? Cheers, Hank
The windows will automatically lower themselves slightly when you go to put the top down (if I recall - it's been a while).
Yup. It's an easy feature to disable by taping down the switch or cutting/wiring. It's supposed to allow you to open the doors and close the doors easier when the top is up. Mine was wired backwards from the factory. Windows would go down an inch or so when the top was down instead of up!
In this instance, the top was already down with its boot in place. He raised the windows and they stopped short of dead top. Wait - I have to ask if they REPOSITIONED back down or if they simply stopped short of the full up height.
same here - I had my windows auto lower the 1.5" or so once when I had the key in the ignition and popped the top, not sure if I've had the ignition enabled before when I did that?
Where exactly is the switch for the windows that I can tape down? My windows work fine when the top is up, but don't work at all when the top is down. Putting tape on this switch may be easier than putting tape on my wife's mouth when we drive with the top down and she goes on about getting too wind blown.
The switch is a tiny little device in the upholstry above the left/U.S.-driver-side visor. Remove the 3 phillips screws that hold on each visor, then remove the 3 larger screws that hold on each metal convertible top latch assembly. Pull down the long horizontal trim piece and look in the upper left corner. Two wires will go to it. ...but that switch won't stop your windows from working, sorry.
On mine, if the top and windows were up, the windows dropped a hair if I put the top down. Once down, the windows would roll up completely. As a habit, I alwyas dropped the windows first before dropping the top. Driving with the top down and windows up is so lame! Oh, and don't forget that the windows only roll down so far as to leave exposed about 1.5" of window.
